Scarborough fair
Nox Arcana Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Yesterday holds memories in time
Remember me to the one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

Tell her to think back upon younger days
Yesterday holds memories in time
And seek yonder crossroads where we parted ways
Then she'll be a true love of mine

Tell her to follow the path to the shire
Yesterday holds memories in time
For there she'll find her heart's true desire
Then she'll be a true love of mine

Tell her to come to the old willow tree
Yesterday holds memories in time
Where spirits of lost love yet whisper to thee
Thou art still a true love of mine

Tell her to gather three lilies of white
Yesterday holds memories in time
To place at my headstone, beneath the moon's light

Then she'll be a true love of mine
Forever she'll be the one true love of mine

Overall Meaning

The song Scarborough Fair, performed by Nox Arcana, is a haunting and melancholy ballad that speaks to the enduring power of love and the pain of separation. The lyrics speak to a lover who is sending a message to a former flame who lives in the town of Scarborough. The singer implores the message to be delivered to the former lover, telling her to think back on their past and the love they shared. He asks her to follow a path to a crossroads where they once parted ways, and then to venture to the shire where she will find her heart's true desire. The singer instructs the messenger to tell the former lover to meet him at an old willow tree where spirits of lost love still whisper her name. He asks her to gather three lilies of white to place at his headstone under the moon's light, promising that she will forever be his one true love.

The imagery in this song is rich and evocative, painting a picture of a love that endures even in the face of time and distance. The use of repetition, particularly of the phrase "yesterday holds memories in time," emphasizes the cyclical nature of love and memory. The haunting melody, accompanied by delicate acoustic guitar and chimes, gives the song a mournful quality that speaks to the heartache of lost love.

The meaning of love and about the counties called shires in old England This being were i live ,

Yorkshire was all farms and back in those days hundreds of years ago the farmer road to Scarborough town on the coast were a pageant was held for young maidens who hoped to me a prospective husband .

The pageant was held just out side the town and was held a few days a year .This itself ran for a few hundred years ..Many a love was found but back in those days life expectancy was not much than 30 years of age .So it was very important to find love but with so little people around and farmers were all ways working meant finding a lady was impossible .
So they got the horse and cart, and on there way picking up other young farm hands and traveled with the farm owners . The farm owners would drop them off while they carried on into the town market to sell their goods . On there return the farm owner would pick up the farm hands and travel back to the farms .
But one farm hand fell in love with a special lady and hoped to return to the pageant where he had made a promises to return . But unfortunately he died but leaving a message to asking his friend to deliver to the lady .
Asking for here to bring 3white lilies to his grave ..to show and connect there wanting love ............So sad, .as...... did she take 3 white lilies and find his grave .

We have here in England many church yards dating back a thousand years . Most placed on hills built of stone and towering hundreds of feet and all with grave yards .
Were would he be ?
The music connects these two lives ....showing how short life can be ............ My son died after suffering juvenile Huntington's Chorea , He never got to embrace a women or feel love . My daughter also died 6moths after my son , but she was lucky in having love even though only for a short while,

So the farm hands love can be felt right through this song , just think how he felt on that wonderful day.................. Gene
