Nuclear Assault had released six studio albums to date, in addition to two live albums, four EPs and one compilation album. Their most successful records are Survive (1988) and Handle with Care (1989), which peaked at Nos. 145 and 126 on the Billboard 200 chart, respectively. Other than four new songs in 2015 on the EP Pounder, the band had not released a full-length studio album since 2005's Third World Genocide, and they would continue to perform live sporadically over the years before calling it quits once again in 2022.

A change of my mind and a change of my soul
Turning my back on the past I once knew
Sacrificing everything that I hold
Becoming something foul and obscene
Losing my will to do as I feel
I feel now that I've lost all that I love
Promises forgotten friendships left in the dust
Now I try to remain true to your memory
Time goes by and years work their way on me
Memories dim as my body grows old
A life of wandering alone is what I have made
Too late now I have learned what I regret
My eyes see more than most,
Maybe I see more than I want to see
My ears hear more than most,
Maybe I hear more than I want to hear
My mouth says more than most,
Maybe I say more than I want to say
My heart feels more than most,
Maybe I feel more than I want to feel
Now I break free from the chains of my own self restraint
No more will I be bound by outside constrains
I found the source of strength within myself
No more will I let myself be less than I am
The lyrics to Nuclear Assault's song "The Forge" describe a personal transformation and realization for the singer. They have experienced a change in their mind and soul, turning their back on their past and sacrificing everything they once held dear. The singer has become something "foul and obscene," losing their will to act on their own desires and feeling as though they have lost all that they love. The mention of a past meeting far from home suggests that perhaps the singer's transformation was influenced by someone they met, and that they are now trying to remain true to their memory.
As time goes on, the singer's memories fade and they feel as though they have lived a life of isolation and regret. However, they also recognize that they possess a level of perception and emotion that surpasses that of most people. They have come to the realization that they need to break free from the self-imposed restraints that have been holding them back and embrace the strength that lies within themselves. They refuse to be bound by external constraints any longer and will no longer settle for being less than they are.
Overall, "The Forge" is a song that explores themes of personal transformation, self-realization, and breaking free from constraints. It is an introspective piece that encourages listeners to embrace their own strength and potential.
