Easier
Null Device Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tell me one thing, she said
Do you remember what we did in bed?
The lines we used, the things we said
All these thoughts now in your head

Not the lies I told you then
Not the lies that might have been
But they're torn and tattered
And, she said, our love has shattered

Leaving's always easier
When you've got someplace to go
Break away for something more
You're traveling too slow
Running back down to the start
With nothing left to show
Leaving's always easier
When you've got someplace to go

Tell me one thing, I said
Do you remember how we laughed in bed?
The parts we played, the lines unsaid
All these thoughts now in your head

All the roles I might have been
All the roles that we'd pretend
Well, they're worn and battered
And, I guess, they haven't mattered

Is it easier?
It's always easier

Tell me one thing
Do you remember?
Do you?

Just tell me one thing
Is it easier?
It's always easier

Leaving's always easier
When you've got someplace to go
Running off now to explore
You're traveling too slow
Falling back down to the start
With nothing left to show
Leaving's always easier
When you've got someplace to go

It's not easy
Tell me it's not easy

Do you remember?
Tell me you remember

Is it easier?
Tell me is it easy?

Do you remember

Tell me, tell me
Will you remember?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Null Device's song "Easier" are a conversation between two former lovers, reflecting on their past relationship and the ease of leaving when there is somewhere else to go. The first verse is spoken from the perspective of the woman, asking if the man remembers their intimate moments and the words they exchanged. She distinguishes the truth from the lies and acknowledges the demise of their relationship. The chorus emphasizes how leaving becomes simpler once an individual has secured another place to go, though one may be running too slow towards their new start.

In the second verse, it is the man who reminisces, asking if the woman remembers their lighthearted moments and the roles they played in bed. He takes responsibility for the illusion they created together, acknowledging that it has become worn and beaten. The chorus repeats the idea that leaving is always easier when one has another place to go.

The refrain "Is it easier? It's always easier" reflects the doubts the two have about their decision to end things, but ultimately conclude that it is indeed easier to leave with another option in sight.

Overall, the song captures the bittersweet quality of nostalgia and demonstrates how easy it is to chase after new beginnings, leaving everything and everyone else behind.

Nice. I’m trying to hook up a 386 machine to my network and I decided on a similar solution.

@Gareth Poole I did the same thing with the 4825 SX. It has a 16-bit Ethernet card in it now for day-to-day things. I also used the option ROM socket to put in a XTIDE Universal BIOS EPROM so I can use large hard drives.

@TJBChris Thanks! I’ve been getting really into the 386 experience lately so I even went ahead and ordered an Ethernet card for it. The serial approach is fun and I enjoy he dialup-like nature of it, but the hard drive in this thing is tiny and I figured it would be nice to be able to run software directly off the network. i also got myself a Wi-Fi modem emulator for my C64 to get it online.

It’s a great way to get the β€˜90s web experience with actual web pages from the era. Thanks for watching and good luck with your retro dial up setup!
