New Shoes
Nutini Paolo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Woke up cold one Tuesday
I'm looking tired and feeling quite sick
I felt like there was something missing in my day to day life
So I quickly opened the wardrobe
Pulled out some jeans and a T-shirt that seemed clean
Topped it off with a pair of old shoes
That were ripped around the seams
And I thought these shoes just don't suit me

Hey, I put some new shoes on
And suddenly everything's right
I said, hey, I put some new shoes on
And everybody's smiling, it's so inviting
Oh, short on money but long on time
Slowly strolling in the sweet sunshine
And I'm running late and I don't need an excuse
'Cause I'm wearing my brand new shoes

Woke up late one Thursday
And I'm seeing stars as I'm rubbing my eyes
And I felt like there were two days missing as I focused on the time
Then I made my way to the kitchen
But I had to stop from the shock of what I found
A room full of all of my friends all dancing 'round and 'round
And I thought hello new shoes, bye-bye blues

Hey, I put some new shoes on
And suddenly everything is right
I said, hey, I put some new shoes on
And everybody's smiling, it's so inviting
Oh, short on money but long on time
Slowly strolling in the sweet sunshine
And I'm running late and I don't need an excuse
'Cause I'm wearing my brand new shoes

Take me wandering through these streets
Where bright lights and angels meet
Stone to stone they take me on
I'm walking 'til the break of dawn
Take me wandering through these streets
Where bright lights and angels meet
Stone to stone they take me on
I'm walking 'til the break of dawn

Hey, I put some new shoes on
And suddenly everything is right
I said, hey, I put some new shoes on
And everybody's smiling, it's so inviting
Oh, short on money but long on time
Slowly strolling in the sweet sunshine
And I'm running late and I don't need an excuse
'Cause I'm wearing my brand new shoes

Oh, hey, I put some new shoes on
And suddenly everything is right
I said, hey, I put some new shoes on
And everybody's smiling, it's so inviting
Oh, short on money but long on time
Slowly strolling in the sweet sunshine

And I'm running late and I don't need an excuse
'Cause I'm wearing my brand new shoes

Overall Meaning

"New Shoes" by Paolo Nutini is a song about changing one's outlook on life by simply treating oneself to something new. The song opens with the singer waking up feeling under the weather and unhappy with his life. He feels as though something is missing, and decides to change that by putting on some new clothes, including some brand new shoes. This simple act of treating oneself to something new changes his perspective, and everything in his life suddenly feels right. He goes on a walk through the city, feeling happy and carefree, and runs into a group of friends who are all dancing and having a good time. This final scene serves as a metaphor for how our mindset can change the world around us, as the singer's simple act of treating himself to something new changed the entire course of his day and led him to a positive outcome.

The chorus of "New Shoes" is incredibly catchy and upbeat, making it a crowd-pleaser and popular choice for wedding DJs and other celebratory events. Despite its cheerful tone, however, the song has a deeper message about the importance of self-care and treating oneself. The themes of the song are relatable and uplifting, making it a fan favorite among people of all ages.

If you haven't a really bad day try this song ( chumbawamba tubthumping ) used to listen to this in my car going to work.

@richardmycroft5336

I use it for that same reason. Anytime life is being obnoxious, I just play this and I'm dancing. Sometimes with clothes on.

Finally, a version that wasn’t filmed though Paolo’s old shoes

@spuriouslathos2518

My wife convinced me to buy a new pair of shoes in my favorite color red instead of the regular black. I wasn't sure I liked it, but everywhere I go, somebody will tell me how much they like them. It's a nice little cinfidence boost.

The Paolo Nutini Effect is real.

They're just being nice lol
