Tea for Two
O'Day Anita Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Picture you upon my knee,
Just tea for two and two for tea,
Just me for you
And you for me alone.

Nobody near us
To see us or hear us,
No friends or relations
On weekend vacations.
We won't have it known, dear,
That we own a telephone, dear;

Day will break and you'll awake
And start to bake a sugar cake,
For me to take
For all the boys to see.

We will raise a family,
A boy for you, a girl for me.

Oh, can't you see
How happy we would be?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Tea for Two" by O'Day Anita is a romantic proposal between two people who want to spend time together, just the two of them sipping tea, without the interference of anyone else. It starts with the singer, inviting her love interest to sit with her and enjoy the simple pleasure of having a cup of tea. Almost like a euphemism for taking pleasure in each other's company. The song describes how the couple wants to be alone and not let anybody know about their love life. They don't want the outside world to peek in and disturb their private moments, and thus they prefer not to have a phone. The following lines talk about how the morning will bring about new beginnings, with the girl making a sugar cake for the boy to take and show off to their friends. The song concludes with both of them visualizing their future together, raising a family with a boy for the girl and a girl for the boy, and how happy they would be.

Anita O'Day was one of the greatest jazz vocalists in history.

100% FACTS in my book.

I have listened to Anita O'Day since I was 13. (29 now) I have listened to this performance so many times, and all of her discography I can get my hands on. I STILL can't sing along to this. She has a rhythm all on her own that is so snappy and bouncy. Ugh, love it.

Perhaps we appreciate Anita O'Day more today than the audience did at the Newport Jazz Festival 1958.
See Anita O'Day - the Life of a Jazz Singer on DVD. Read her autobiography High Times, Hard Times with George Eels.

Haven't seen this in over 30 years till just now, and even on a small screen I'm as moved now as I was then. A rare gem--transcendent!
