Black Rock
O.A.R Live Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On the black rock is where I spend my time
Writing a memory or writing a rhyme
Thinking about what is right or wrong
On the black rock is where I like to go
After a long night comin' home from the show
That's where I write my song all day long
The black rock
Sometimes, I just look around
Taking the feeling coming out from the ground
That's just something I do sometimes
And then I just come out the door
Taking the wind coming off of the shore
And that's just what I'm doing tonight
On the black rock is where I spend my time
Writing a memory or writing a rhyme
Thinking about what is right or wrong
On the black rock is where I like to go
After a long night comin' home from the show
That's where I write my song all day long
The black rock
When you are on your own
Not speaking out is like fighting alone
And that is the worst damn way to fight
And when you are scared no more
You reach your hand out and just open the door
And that's just what I'm doing tonight
On the black rock is where I spend my time
Writing a memory or writing a rhyme
Thinking about what is right or wrong
On the black rock is where I like to go
After a long night comin' home from the show

That's where I write my song all day long
The black rock

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of O.A.R Live's song Black Rock talk about a place where the singer likes to spend his time. This place is the black rock, where he finds inspiration to write songs and reflect on life. The black rock seems to be a location where the singer feels free and can express himself without limitations. The opening line states "On the black rock is where I spend my time, writing a memory or writing a rhyme," suggesting that the location holds a lot of significance for him.

The lyrics then go on to say that the singer thinks about what is right or wrong while on the black rock. This could imply that the singer uses this location to reflect on the choices he has made in life, or to contemplate the direction he wants to take in the future. The singer also seems to enjoy being on the black rock after coming home from a long night of performing. This could be a way for the singer to decompress and find peace after being surrounded by the energy of a live crowd.

Later on in the song, the lyrics suggest that speaking out and standing up for oneself is important. The singer says "When you are scared no more, you reach your hand out and just open the door, and that's just what I'm doing tonight." This line could mean that the location of the black rock represents a place of empowerment for the singer. By being on the black rock and reflecting on his life, the singer has found the strength to speak out and take action.

Overall, the song seems to be about finding and embracing a space where one can be creative, reflective, and empowered. The black rock represents a place where the singer can find inspiration to write songs, think about life's choices, and stand up for himself.

My dad made this song one of my core memories. He would frequently take my sister and I fishing, driving in his old Red Corsica, heading to Govenors Island in Madison, WI. Had the roll down windows, old cloth seats. I remember putting the worms on the hooks so vividly. Having him hold the fish and take them off the hook for me, with the rag he always carried in his tackle box. ❤️ my dad is still around and I tell him weekly how much he means to me and how much I love him.
