MILK
O.D Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you remember all the time we called each other just friends
We sat underneath the stars more times than we could ever pretend
I never had the guts to
Go ahead and ask you
To take my hand and dance with me
I always get lost in the melody when you're standing next to me

So won't you hear this song now
And laugh with me till the sun goes down
Let's raise our glasses to the sky
Like we did all the time
And drink, some chocolate milk
Like when we were kids

Do you remember the times when we were just kids
We sat in the car and listened to your favorite jams
I never had the guts to
Go ahead and tell you, that
I wanted to be more than just friends
I thought you'd laugh at me and that'd be the end

So won't you hear this song now
And laugh with me till the sun goes down
Let's raise our glasses to the sky
Like we did all the time
And drink, some chocolate milk
Like when we were kids

I thought I would have to lie
And tell you I never cried
How could I ever think
That this is just a drink
It's a gateway to a forgotten past
An invitation to stop going fast
I see now what I've always ignored
Everything that you adore
Let's take each other happily
And live in harmony
What was just a fantasy is quickly becoming reality

So won't you hear this song now
And laugh with me till the sun goes down
Let's raise our glasses to the sky
Like we did all the time

And drink, some chocolate milk
Like when we were kids

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of O.D's song "Milk" are an interesting take on a man's domestic life being disrupted by the loss of his cow. The song opens with the singer explaining how he woke up in the morning and realized his milk cow was missing. He could tell by the way she lows, which indicates her absence. He urgently asks the listener for their help in finding the cow so that he can have milk and butter as he has not had any since the cow has been gone. This section of the song sets up a melancholic tone that carries through the rest of the song.

The second stanza changes the mood from melancholic to confrontational. The singer addresses a person who has mistreated him and threatens them with retribution. He tells the person to get out their little prayer book, get on their knees, and pray because "you're gonna need my help someday." This line makes it clear that the singer plans to get even with the person and that they will regret mistreating him. The confrontational tone is further emphasized by the lyrics "Well, I said sail, sail on. I said sail on, pretty gal, sail on."

In the last stanza, the singer announces their departure from the relationship. He states that he has tried everything to get along with the person, but it hasn't worked. He decides to leave the person and tells them that if they don't think he's leaving, they can count the days until he's gone. The final line, "you can count on me," adds a layer of uncertainty as to whether or not the singer actually means what he says in the song.
