Smells Like Teen Spirit
ONE OK ROCK Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Load up on guns and bring your friends
It's fun to lose and to pretend
She's over bored and self assured
Oh no, I know a dirty word

Hello, hello, hello, how low?

I'm worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end

Hello, hello, hello, how low?

And I forget just why I taste
Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard, it was hard to find
Oh well, whatever, nevermind

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito

My libito
Yay, a denial

Overall Meaning

The song Smells Like Teen Spirit by ONE OK ROCK is a cover version of the original song by Nirvana that was released in 1991. The lyrics of the song deal with the themes of teenage rebellion, discontent, and non-conformity. The lines "load up on guns and bring your friends" and "it's fun to lose and to pretend" suggest that the singer and their friends are embracing a nihilistic approach to life, where nothing matters and they are willing to take risks.

The reference to "She's over bore and self-assured" implies that the singer is dissatisfied with the world around them, where they feel that everyone is trying to fit into a mold and conform to societal norms. The line "Oh no, I know a dirty word" suggests that the singer knows that there is something wrong with the world, but they do not know what it is. The refrain "hello, hello, hello, how low?" adds to the sense of dissatisfaction and disillusionment, where the singer is calling out to the world to acknowledge their frustration and pain.

The song suggests that the singer feels like they do not fit in and are struggling to find a sense of purpose. However, they find comfort in their little group of friends who share their worldview. The lines "I'm worse at what I do best, and for this gift, I feel blessed" suggest that the singer is willing to accept their flaws and embrace their unique qualities. The song ends with the lines "oh well, whatever, nevermind", suggesting a sense of resignation and detachment from the world around them.

i really enjoy their spin on the song, the way Taka emphasizes the last two hellos before the guitar kicks in is amazing. Its definitely worth listening to more than once to really tell what they changed in their cover from the original. Most would say its bad because it doesnt sound exactly the same but its not meant to, they are recreating the song as their own, not copying and i love it.
