Madame Morrible
Oh, Miss Elphaba...
Many years I have waited for a gift like yours to appear
Why, I predict the Wizard could make you his magic grand vizier!
My dear, my dear, I'll write at once to the Wizard
Tell him of you in advance
With a talent like yours, dear, there is a defin-ish chance
If you work as you should
You'll be making good...

Elphaba
Did that really just happen?
Have I actually understood?
This weird quirk I've tried
To suppress or hide
Is a talent that could
Help me meet the Wizard
If I make good
So, I'll make good...

When I meet the Wizard, once I prove my worth
And then I meet the Wizard, what I've waited for since...since birth!
And with all his Wizard wisdom, by my looks, he won't be blinded
Do you think the Wizard is dumb or, like Munchkins, so small-minded?
No! He'll say to me, "I see who you truly are: a girl on whom I can rely!"
And that's how we'll begin, the Wizard and I...

Once I'm with the Wizard, my whole life will change
'Cause once you're with the Wizard, no one thinks you're strange!
No father is not proud of you, no sister acts ashamed
And all of Oz has to love you when by the Wizard you're acclaimed
And this gift, or this curse, I have inside
Maybe at last, I'll know why
When we are hand in hand, the Wizard and I!

And one day, he'll say to me, "Elphaba, a girl who is so superior
Shouldn't a girl who's so good inside have a matching exterior?
And since folks here to an absurd degree seem fixated on your verdigris
Would it be all right by you if I de-greenify you?"

And though, of course, that's not important to me
"All right, why not?" I'll reply!
Oh, what a pair we'll be, the Wizard and I
Yes, what a pair we'll be, the Wizard and...

Unlimited, my future is unlimited
And I've just had a vision almost like a prophecy
I know, it sounds truly crazy
And true, the vision's hazy
But I swear, someday there'll be
A celebration throughout Oz that's all to do with me!

And I'll stand there with the Wizard feeling things I've never felt
And though I'd never show it, I'd be so happy, I could melt!
And so it will be for the rest of my life
And I'll want nothing else 'til I die

Held in such high esteem
When people see me, they will scream

For half of Oz's fav'rite team:
The Wizard and I!

Overall Meaning

The song "The Wizard And I" from the musical Wicked is a conversation between Madame Morrible, the headmistress of Shiz University, and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. Madame Morrible sees potential in Elphaba's magical abilities and proposes that she should meet the Wizard of Oz, and with her abilities, she could become the Wizard's grand vizier. Elphaba is overwhelmed by this suggestion and decides to take the opportunity to meet the Wizard, hoping to finally be accepted in society. In her mind, she thinks about her hope of finally being able to match her outward appearance with her inner kindness so that that people can truly see her for who she is. She goes on to visualize her life with the Wizard, expressing her unlimited potential and her joy at finally being understood for who she is.

The song is a turning point in Elphaba's life as it reveals her longing for acceptance and her desire to change for the better. From the beginning of the play, Elphaba has been treated as an outcast due to her green appearance, which made her think that she would never achieve acceptance in society. However, with the possibility of becoming the Wizard's grand vizier, she sees a chance to make a name for herself and gain acceptance. The song's lyrics express Elphaba's optimism, hope and confidence. This song is one of the most pivotal of the show and sets up the dramatic story arcs that will follow.

"a celebration throughout Oz, that's all to do with me"

That gets me every time 😟

@chocolatesouljah

me too. Simple fact from the first time I heard this song in 2003.

@susanstorm7910

I mourn her :(

@TherealRNOwwfpooh

@Susan Storm The irony of a song titled "No One Mourns the Wicked" when fans, Glinda, Dorothy, and even the ashamed charlatan Wizard after the fact do mourn Elphie's death (which is only staged in the musical, whereas in the 1995 novel, her melting scene is genuine & she never comes back, with the sequel books focusing on Elphie & Fiyero's lovechild Liir [Son of a Witch] and later, Liir & his nursemaid coven wife Candle's green-tinted daughter rather conveniently named Rain [Out of OZ]).

@CountryCowboy008

The classic foreshadowing in musical 😍

@flareistan_films8819

It’s about her death 😢

@heyitsblinded

Oh my gosh she’s so happy she could melt. These lyrics are frickin good

@isabelerhart9523

The I Don’t Know Show they are 😊

@meltedmarshdaddy

Yes they are and the music itself. Whoever orchestrated this and also the writer himself both deserve huge credit. Its brilliant.

@kimberlyeverill4333

This song is sad because she has so much hope and sees this celebration and she doesn't know how it is about her death. Just seeing her happy and having hope is sad but this song is also really just a great happy song. (sorry if that made no sense)
