Origins
O Rappa got their start in 1993, when Jamaican reggae artist Papa Winnie arrived in Brazil for a series of show and needed a back up band to support him. Four people were immediately picked: Nelson Meirelles, a well-known Rio de Janeiro indie producer; Marcelo Lobato, former member of África Gumbe; Alexandre (Xandão) Menezes, a musician with African influences; and Marcelo Yuka, a prolific songwriter and member of KMD-5 at the time. After the shows with Winnie, the foursome decided to keep the band going and added a vocalist and fifth member, Marcelo Falcão, recruited through an ad in Rio’s main newspaper. In 1994, they released their first album, O Rappa, on the Warner label.
Tragedy
In 2001, Marcelo Lobato who was originally on keyboard had to take over drum duties after the band’s original drummer and main songwriter, Marcelo Yuka, was shot multiple times during a robbery near his house in Rio, which severely compromised movement in both his legs and one of his arms. Yuka has been the biggest contributor of the band's social projects for years, even after turning paralytic. He is currently working on other music projects such as F.Ur.T.O.

Brixton Bronx Ou Baixada
O Rappa Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Tudo, tudo, tudo igual
Brixton, Bronx ou Baixada (refrão)
A poesia não se perde ela apenas se converte
Pelas mãos no tambor
Que desabafam histórias ritmadas como único
Socorro promissor
Cada qual com seu James Brown
Salve o samba, hip-hop, reggae ou carnaval
Cada qual com seu Jorge Bem
Salve o jazz, baião, e os toques da macumba

The lyrics of O Rappa's song Brixton Bronx ou Baixada explore the similarities and differences between the urban landscapes of Brixton and Bronx, two historically impoverished neighborhoods in London and New York, respectively, and Baixada Fluminense, a district located just outside of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The singer in the song questions the meaning behind the graffiti on the walls and the social barriers that divide these communities. Despite the struggles they face, the song also celebrates the strength and resilience of the people who live there, their diverse musical traditions, and the transformative power of rhythm and poetry.
The first verse asks what the wall graffiti and social barriers have to say. It also questions why people learn to pray so early and why so many cults have a place in these communities. The second verse references the contrast between the beauty of music and the harsh reality of gang violence. The chorus repeats the phrase "tudo, tudo, tudo igual" which means "everything, everything, everything is the same" and describes how these different neighborhoods may look different on the surface but have similar issues.
The third verse speaks to the power of art, specifically poetry and drumming, to tell stories and bring hope. The last lines pay homage to diverse musical genres and spiritual traditions, including samba, hip-hop, reggae, jazz, baião, and macumba, suggesting that all of these forms of music can bring people together despite their cultural differences.
