Sinal fechado, o tempo passa e nada muda
O cinza
Guarda-chuvas fecham e se escondem no metrô
Encharcando o chão do trem
O cinza
The song “O Cinza” by Brazilian band O Terno speaks to the city of São Paolo, particularly the monotony of daily life with its distinctive overcast skies. The lyrics describe the mundane morning routine of many, with the tossing aside of the newspaper and the sipping of coffee, all while surrounded by the endless gray of the urban landscape. The traffic is congested and the crowds only seem to pile up, creating a sleepy march towards the city’s cathedral. The singer is stuck in the middle of the road, but even as the stoplight changes, nothing seems to change. The people around him are running, but without clear direction. They all merely strive to escape the dullness of life in the city.
The rain sets in later in the day, accompanied by the typical mists of São Paolo. The sun will not set because it never rose to begin with, leaving only darkness in the cityscape. Umbrellas close up and hide in the subway, dripping with water onto the train floor. From the sky, the smoke rises and spreads between the blaring horns of the passing cars. The streets glow even in the daytime. Ultimately, the cycle of life in São Paolo starts anew with another overcast morning, with the sun refusing to rise once again.
