Oasis signed to independent record label Creation Records in 1993 and released their record-setting debut album Definitely Maybe (1994). The following year they recorded (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (1995) with drummer Alan White, in the midst of a chart rivalry with peers Blur. Spending ten weeks at number one on the UK Albums Chart, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? was also an international chart success and became one of the best-selling albums of all time. In addition, it stands as the fifth-best-selling album in the UK and the biggest-selling album in the UK of the 1990s. The Gallagher brothers featured regularly in tabloid newspapers for their disputes and wild lifestyles. In 1996, Oasis performed two nights at Knebworth for an audience of 125,000 each time, the largest outdoor concerts in UK history at the time. In 1997, Oasis released their third album, Be Here Now. It became the fastest-selling album in UK chart history.
Oasis' popularity later declined and McGuigan and Arthurs left in 1999 as Oasis released Standing on the Shoulder of Giants (2000). They were replaced by former Heavy Stereo guitarist Gem Archer and former Ride guitarist Andy Bell. White departed in 2004, replaced by Zak Starkey and later Chris Sharrock. Oasis released three more studio albums, Heathen Chemistry (2002), Don't Believe the Truth (2005) and Dig Out Your Soul (2008). The group abruptly disbanded after the departure of Noel Gallagher in August 2009.
As of 2009, Oasis had sold over 70 million records worldwide. They are among the most successful acts on the UK Singles Chart and Albums Chart, with eight UK number-one singles and eight UK number-one albums. The band also achieved three platinum albums in the US. They won 17 NME Awards, nine Q Awards, four MTV Europe Music Awards and six Brit Awards, including one in 2007 for Outstanding Contribution to Music and one for the "Best Album of the Last 30 Years" for (What's the Story) Morning Glory?. They were nominated for two Grammy Awards.

05 The Importance Of Being Idle
Oasis Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I begged my landlord for some more time, he said "Son, the bill's waiting."
My best friend called me the other night, he said, "Man, are you crazy?"
My girlfriend told me to get a life, she said, "Boy, you lazy."
But I don't mind, as long as there's a bed beneath the stars that shine.
I'll be fine - if you give me a minute, a man's got a limit.
I can't get a life if my heart's not in it.
I don't mind, as long as there's a bed beneath the stars that shine.
I'll be fine - if you give me a minute, a man's got a limit.
I can't get a life if my heart's not in it.
I lost my faith in the summertime, 'cause it don't stop raining.
The sky all day is black as night, but I know I can't blame me.
I begged my Doctor for one more line, he said "Son, words fail me!"
There ain't no place to be killing time, I guess I'm just lazy.
I don't mind, as long as there's a bed beneath the stars that shine.
I'll be fine - if you give me a minute, a man's got a limit.
I can't get a life if my heart's not in it.
The Importance of Being Idle by Oasis is a song about embracing laziness and the desire to simply lay back and enjoy life. The lyrics talk about how the singer has been criticized by friends, family, and lovers for his lack of ambition and work ethic. The first verse talks about how he sold his soul for the second time and the man doesn't pay him, perhaps a reference to a job he dislikes. He then begs his landlord for more time, highlighting his financial struggles. His friends question his sanity and his girlfriend tells him to get a life. Despite all this, the singer doesn't mind living a laid-back life as long as he has a bed beneath the stars to sleep under. He believes that he can't force himself to do something if his heart isn't in it.
The second verse talks about how the singer has lost his faith in summertime because it rains all the time. This could be a metaphor for how his life always seems to go wrong, despite his efforts. He begs his doctor for one more line, perhaps a reference to drugs, but the doctor tells him that words fail him. The singer then acknowledges that there is no place to kill time, yet he remains lazy.
The song is a commentary on modern-day society's obsession with productivity and success. It encourages listeners to embrace their laziness and not be ashamed of it. It recognizes that everyone has limits and it's okay to take a break and relax.
