15. Don't Look Back In Anger
Oasis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Slip inside the eye of your mind
Don't you know you might find
A better place to play
You said that you'd never been
But all the things that you've seen
Will slowly fade away

So I start a revolution from my bed
'Cause you said the brains I had went to my head.
Step outside, summertime's in bloom
Stand up beside the fireplace
Take that look from off your face
You ain't ever gonna burn my heart out

And so Sally can wait, she knows it's too late as we're walking on by
Her soul slides away, but don't look back in anger I heard you say

Take me to the place where you go
Where nobody knows if it's night or day
But please don't put your life in the hands
Of a Rock n Roll band
Who'll throw it all away

I'm gonna start a revolution from my bed
'Cause you said the brains I had went to my head
Step outside 'cos summertime's in bloom
Stand up beside the fireplace
Take that look from off your face
'Cause you ain't ever gonna burn my heart out

So Sally can wait, she knows it's too late as she's walking on by
My soul slides away, but don't look back in anger I heard you say

So Sally can wait, she knows it's too late as we're walking on by
Her soul slides away, but don't look back in anger I heard you say

So Sally can wait
She knows it's too late as she's walking on by
My soul slides away
But don't look back in anger
Don't look back in anger
I heard you say

At least not today

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song, “Slip inside the eye of your mind / Don’t you know you might find / A better place to play”, are about transcending oneself into a meditative state where a person can find solace from the harsh realities of life. The singer encourages the listener to look within themselves and find a better place to be mentally. The song then progresses to a story about a couple who have had some tough experiences that they want to leave behind. The singer tries to motivate the person to start a revolution and change things for the better.

The chorus “So Sally can wait, she knows it's too late as we're walking on by / Her soul slides away, but don't look back in anger I heard you say” is about moving on from the past and not holding grudges. The singer talks about Sally, who can no longer go back and change anything, but the listener should not be angry and should let go of any negative emotions. The final lines “But don't look back in anger / Don't look back in anger / I heard you say / At least not today” further emphasize the importance of forgiveness and letting go of the past.

I was 14 when this song came out, we had to wait hours just to see this vid on MTV, we had no internet. I found the lyrics on a magazine, I ripped the page and put it on the wall, it was golden to me. We used to sing their songs while coming home from school. We didn't know but it was the best fckin time of our lives, thank you Oasis for growing up with us.

@JohnnyB15

This masterpiece is no longer a song - it is a hymn...

@TheMacQku

at the beginning I think that it is Imagine by John Lennon xx

@Ersa1a

It's like these guys captured the soul of The Beatles and updated it to the 90's. They're one of the most awesome bands ever. When you listen to an Oasis song it's like they're completely in charge of your emotions.

@gabrielguerramartinez698

Oasis you're the 90' Music!

@ARHemant

Noel Gallaghar says he doesn't understand these lyrics himself: "I get the odd night when I'm halfway through Don't Look Back In Anger when I say to myself 'I still don't know what these words mean!' I'm thinking what the... what the... 'stand up beside the fireplace'. Why? And all these kids will be singing it at the top of their voices with all their arms around each other and I kind of feel like stopping and going, 'Look, can somebody help me out here? Am I missing something?'" Epic!

@Guard3226

Noel and Liam are lucky to have those great voices. Bless them, can't wait to go see them in concert!
