Oasis signed to independent record label Creation Records in 1993 and released their record-setting debut album Definitely Maybe (1994). The following year they recorded (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (1995) with drummer Alan White, in the midst of a chart rivalry with peers Blur. Spending ten weeks at number one on the UK Albums Chart, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? was also an international chart success and became one of the best-selling albums of all time. In addition, it stands as the fifth-best-selling album in the UK and the biggest-selling album in the UK of the 1990s. The Gallagher brothers featured regularly in tabloid newspapers for their disputes and wild lifestyles. In 1996, Oasis performed two nights at Knebworth for an audience of 125,000 each time, the largest outdoor concerts in UK history at the time. In 1997, Oasis released their third album, Be Here Now. It became the fastest-selling album in UK chart history.
Oasis' popularity later declined and McGuigan and Arthurs left in 1999 as Oasis released Standing on the Shoulder of Giants (2000). They were replaced by former Heavy Stereo guitarist Gem Archer and former Ride guitarist Andy Bell. White departed in 2004, replaced by Zak Starkey and later Chris Sharrock. Oasis released three more studio albums, Heathen Chemistry (2002), Don't Believe the Truth (2005) and Dig Out Your Soul (2008). The group abruptly disbanded after the departure of Noel Gallagher in August 2009.
As of 2009, Oasis had sold over 70 million records worldwide. They are among the most successful acts on the UK Singles Chart and Albums Chart, with eight UK number-one singles and eight UK number-one albums. The band also achieved three platinum albums in the US. They won 17 NME Awards, nine Q Awards, four MTV Europe Music Awards and six Brit Awards, including one in 2007 for Outstanding Contribution to Music and one for the "Best Album of the Last 30 Years" for (What's the Story) Morning Glory?. They were nominated for two Grammy Awards.

D' You Know What I Mean?
Oasis Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Back into the hole where I was born
The sun in the sky never raised an eye to me
There's blood on the trax, and they must be mine
The fool on the hill, and I feel fine
Don't look back 'cause you know what you might see
Look into the wall of my mind's eye
The questions are the answers you might need
Coming in a mess, going out in style
I ain't good-looking,but I'm someone's child
No-one can give me the air that's mine to breathe
I met my maker
I made him cry
And on my shoulder he asked me why
His people won't fly through the storm
I said listen up man, they don't even know you're born
All my people right here, right now
D'you Know What I Mean? Yeah, yeah
All my people right here, right now
D'you Know What I Mean? Yeah, yeah
All my people right here, right now
D'you Know What I Mean? Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I don't really care for what you believe
So open up your fist or you won't receive
The thoughts and the words of every man you'll need
Get up off the floor and believe in life
No-one's ever gonna ever ask you twice
Get on the bus and bring it on home to me
I met my maker,
I made him cry
And on my shoulder he asked me why
His people won't fly through the storm
I said "Listen up man, they don't even know you're born"
All my people right here, right now
They Know What I Mean yeah, yeah
All my people right here, right now
They Know What I Mean yeah, yeah
All my people right here, right now
They Know What I Mean yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
All my people right here, right now
D'you Know What I Mean? Yeah, yeah
All my people right here, right now
D'you Know What I Mean? Yeah, yeah
All my people right here, right now
D'you Know What I Mean? Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
The lyrics of Oasis's song "Do You Know What I Mean?" appear to be a reflection of lead singer Liam Gallagher's experiences in life. The opening lines describe the sense of disconnection that he feels with society, as he steps off a train alone at dawn and heads back to the place where he was born. The sun does not even acknowledge his presence, which emphasizes his loneliness. The line "There's blood on the trax, and they must be mine" suggests that he has a dark past that haunts him, and perhaps he is responsible for some wrongdoing.
The next verse appears to be a poetic reflection on the nature of existence as Liam contemplates the questions that he has about life. He seems to suggest that the answers to his questions are subjective and might be different for every individual. The lines "Coming in a mess, going out in style" suggest that life is unpredictable but that people should try to live it to the fullest. Liam takes a moment to reflect on his appearance, acknowledging that he is not conventionally attractive, but it does not affect his worth as a human being.
