Idler's Dream
Oasis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My heart it skips a beat when I behold
The light that's shining through your eyes of gold
From heavenly blood you seem to spring
From heavenly waters you can drink

I'll meet you on a day that never ends
I'll greet you in a way that heaven meant
You lay me down gently on the leaves
You cover me over in my sleep

I never did say that I wish I could
I never could pray 'cause it's just no good
I hope you don't break my heart of stone
I don't want to scream out loud

And wake up on my own
And as I close my eyes
And the sky turns red
I realize just what you are

You're an idler's dream
And you're singing Shangri-La

Shangri-La

Shangri-La
Shangri-La

Overall Meaning

Oasis's "Idler's Dream" appears on their 2002 album "Heathen Chemistry", and it is a song about the longing for a perfect world that seems impossible to achieve. The song is characterized by the powerful and reflective lyrics that offer a glimpse into the deepest desires and fears of the singer.

The opening lines of the song set the tone for the whole song. The singer's heart skips a beat every time they look into the eyes of their beloved, and they see a light shining through their eyes that indicates a divine presence. The lover, in the singer's eyes, is an entity originating from heavenly blood and water that they can drink. The use of the heavens and water imagery in the lyrics is used to show how the love he feels for his beloved is celestial and otherworldly.

The song's chorus is simply spectacular, with the singer's voice soaring as they sing about heaven and their ultimate desire to be with their beloved. Throughout the song, the singer is living in fear that his heart would be broken because he believes that his heart of stone might not be able to take the pain of a broken heart.

In conclusion, "Idler's Dream" is a beautiful song that deals with love, loss, desire, and the ultimate longing of humankind. It is a deeply emotional song that connects with people on different levels.

As a pretty big Oasis fan I’m a little ashamed to say I’d never heard of this before. I just came from TikTok where Noel’s asked “what do you love about being a songwriter?” He said he was “out shopping in London & Idler’s Dreams which nobody cares about was regaled by a girl about what it meant to her”. “That’s what it’s all about, in a nutshell”… Beautiful.

Wow. I've just done exactly the same.

i get annoyed that people dont know this side to oasis, feels like people dont understand just how magical a band they are because they dont know of this back catalouge of hidden bursts of heaven. But then i guess a part of me is glad that im in the select few who know these little oasis secrets. Best Band of my time, Noel Gallagher my Hero.

Don’t get mad Brah

I actually find it amusing, when someone says “ they had no talent, or they couldn’t sing “ I just direct these people to their catalogue 👍👍

@iron1992

Most people don't have a clue they've written half the songs they have 🤷‍♂️
