My Big Mouth
Oasis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everybody knows
But no-one's saying nothing
And it's a sound so very loud
That no-one can hear
I got something in my shoes it's keeping me from walking
Down the long and winding road back home to you

Around this town you've ceased to be
That's what you get for sleeping with the enemy
Where angels fly you won't play
So guess who's gonna take the blame

For my big mouth, my big name
I'll put on my shoes while they're walking slowly down the hall of fame?
Into my big mouth you could fly a plane
I'll put on my shoes while they're walking slowly down the hall of fame?
Slowly down the hall of fame

I ain't never spoke to God
And I ain't never been to heaven
But you assumed I knew the way
Even though the map was given
And as you look into the eyes
Of a bloody cold assassin
Is only then you'll realize
With who's life you have been messin'

Around this town you've ceased to be
That's what you get for sleeping with the enemy
Where angels fly you won't play
So guess who's gonna take the blame

For my big mouth, my big name
Who'll put on my shoes while they're walking
Slowly down the hall of fame?
Into my big mouth you could fly a plane
I'll put on my shoes while they're walking slowly down the hall of fame
Slowly down the hall of fame (fame, fame)
Slowly down the hall of fame (fame, fame)

And round this town, you've ceased to be
That's what you get for sleeping with the enemy
Where angels fly you won't play
I guess who's going to take the blame

For my big mouth, my big name
I'll put on my shoes while I'm walking slowly down the hall of fame
Into my big mouth, yeah you could fly a plane
I'll put on my shoes while I'm walking

Slowly down the hall of fame (fame, fame)

Slowly down the hall of fame (fame, fame)
Slowly down the hall of fame (fame, fame)

Overall Meaning

The song "My Big Mouth" by Oasis talks about a person who has a lot to say but nobody hears them. This person feels like they are being prevented from reaching their destination by something in their shoes. The lyrics suggest that the person has been betrayed by someone they trusted, referred to as "sleeping with the enemy." The phrase "Where angels fly you won't play" implies that the person has lost their innocence and no longer feels comfortable in certain situations.

The chorus of the song talks about the person's reputation being larger than themselves, with their "big mouth" and "big name" taking up space in the "hall of fame." The song suggests that people have assumed things about the person's life, despite not knowing them well. The lines "I ain't never spoke to God" and "I ain't never been to heaven" suggest that the person is not perfect, but they are being judged unfairly by others.

Oasis really were the dogs ballocks. They were the biggest band in the world at this point and it shows. I wasn't old enough to be at Knebworth but the legend spread like wild fire amongst us. They need to release a DVD of this concert. Not a half assed make do edition. A full HD, No bullshit documentary box of one of Oasis' truly greatest achievements.

Eric Beck

Man, England is not the world; America is way bigger than England.  Oasis always likes to say they were the biggest band in the world, and I can see why they had that impression with a massive concert like Knebworth; As the biggest Oasis fan (I knew) in America at the time though, I can definitively tell you they were not close to the biggest band in America; They had loads of momentum off Morning Glory (they were trendy - ppl were checking them out), but they imploded before really achieving the massive, pervasive success of a U2 or others with stuff like Liam bailing on MTV Unplugged, Liam canceling a US tour cuz he needed to go house hunting, etc; Be Here Now didn't even debut at #1 in America; It wasn't long after this that it actually became embarrassing to admit you were an Oasis fan in America, b/c there was such a backlash against Liam's asshole-ness; It would have been cool to be in England during this period though for sure.

Craig Anderson

+Eric Beck and in response, America is not the world either. Outside of America, the band were fucking massive. The U.S were never going to like Oasis much anyway. Far too outspoken and self assured for that to happen. And I'm glad they never fully broke over there. Because to do that Liam and Noel would have had to play the game, shake hands and kiss ass, and thankfully they didn't and never would have done that. Still 10 million albums sold in the U.S still isn't bad.

Eric Beck

Yeah, but you can't say Oasis was the biggest band in the world.  As I stated, I know how dominant they were in England - I knew it at that time.  And I know they were popular elsewhere.  But you can't say a band is the biggest band in the world if they weren't close to the top in America.  That's just the way it is - regardless of whether that's offensive to other countries.  And 90% of my favorite bands are British.
