Shakermaker
Oasis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'd like to be somebody else and not know where I've been
I'd like to build myself a house out of plasticine
Ah, shake along with me
Ah, shake along with me

I've been driving in my car with my friend Mister Soft
Mister Clean and Mister Ben are living in my loft
Ah, shake along with me
Ah, shake along with me

I'm sorry but I just don't know
I know I said I told you so
When you're happy and you're feeling fine
Then you'll know it's the right time
Then you'll know that it's the right time

To shake along with me
Shake along with me
Shake along with me
Shake along with me

Mister Sifter sold me songs
When I was just sixteen
Now he stops at traffic lights
But only when they're green

Ah, shake along with me
Ah, shake along with me
Ah, shake along with me
Ah, shake along with me
Shake along with me
Shake along with me
Shake along with me
Shake along with them
Shake along with me

Shake along with them
Shake along with me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Oasis's song Shakermaker are a bit cryptic but it seems to be about wanting to escape reality and become someone else. The line "I'd like to be somebody else and not know where I've been" speaks to a desire to forget one's past and start anew. The idea of building a house out of plasticine adds to this theme of wanting to create a new reality for oneself, one that is malleable and easily manipulated.

The second stanza of the song introduces the singer's friends - Mister Soft, Mister Clean, and Mister Ben - who seem to be living in the singer's loft. It's unclear who these friends are, but they might represent aspects of the singer's personality or different personas they've created for themselves. The repetition of "shake along with me" throughout the song adds to the overall feeling of wanting to escape and create a new reality.

The last stanza of the song mentions Mister Sifter, who sold the singer songs when they were sixteen, and how he now only stops at traffic lights when they're green. This references the idea of time passing by and the singer longing for their younger days when things were simpler. The last repetition of "shake along with me" invites the listener to join in on this desire to create a new reality and forget the past.

Overall, Shakermaker is a somewhat surreal song about wanting to escape reality and create a new one. The use of plasticine and the singer's friends living in their loft add to the dreamlike quality of the lyrics.

Just wanna say a bit about Oasis. Something about the English culture I’m really into, the music especially. The football. I’m from Texas. But let me tell you. OASIS are therapy for me. I’ve struggled with anxiety as of late and even confidence but when I listen to Oasis, I’m hype. I get shit done. I have a fuck it attitude. My confidence has grown since discovering OASIS and I’m forever grateful for them. PEACE & LOVE!!
