Riverside
Obel Agnes Lyrics

Down by the river by the boats
Where everybody goes to be alone
Where you won't see any rising sun
Down to the river we will run

When by the water we drinks to the dregs
Look at the stones on the riverbed
I can tell from your eyes
You've never been by the riverside

Down by the water the riverbed
Somebody calls you somebody says
Swim with the current and float away
Down by the river every day

Oh my god I see how everything is torn in the river deep
And I don't know why I go the way
Down by the riverside

When that old river runs past your eyes
To wash off the dirt on the riverside
Go to the water so every near
The river will be your eyes and ears

I walk to the borders on my own
Fall in the water just like a stone
Chilled to the marrow in them bones
Why do I go here alone

Oh my god I see how everything is torn in the river deep
And I don't know why I go the way
Down by the riverside

Oh my god I see how everything is torn in the river deep
And I don't know why I go the way
Down by the riverside

Oh oh
Ah ah ah
Oh oh
Ah ah ah

Oh oh
Ah ah ah

Down by the riverside

Down by the riverside

Overall Meaning

In Obel Agnes's song Riverside the lyrics describe a place near a river where people go to be alone and escape the reality of their everyday life. The verse "Down to the river we will run" implies a sense of desperation to escape and find solace by the riverside. The next verse describes the act of drinking by the river and observing the stones on the riverbed, perhaps in a moment of introspection. The line "You've never been by the riverside" suggests that the person they are with is not familiar with this place and the emotions it evokes.

The chorus of the song repeats the line "Oh my god I see how everything is torn in the river deep" which implies that the river is a metaphor for the brokenness and turmoil within the singer's own life. The line "And I don't know why I go the way Down by the riverside" further emphasizes the confusion and uncertainty within the singer's mind. The last verse describes the singer going to the river alone, falling in the water and feeling a deep sense of coldness that penetrates their bones. This imagery evokes a feeling of numbness that the singer may be experiencing in their life.

I have a really special, amazing memory associated with this song, it’s the one song in my life that fills me with true melancholy. I don’t know if anyone will ever actually read this, but I think it’s quite a fun story for the love lovers out there.

When I was 14, my mum and I went on holiday to Iceland. As soon as I saw the landscape from the plane I already felt like it was going to be a magical experience (I was also a 14 year old who romanticises EVERYTHING and 10 years later at 24 I am still the same lmfao). Anyway, we have a couple of excursions booked through our Hotel, one of them being driving out into the middle of nowhere to see the northern lights.

So we are on the bus, I notice a cute blonde boy go past when I had already sat down, and then he sat one row from behind me, so we are pretty close in proximity on the bus. We stop a few times in different locations. On the first stop, he held up a bit of fencing for me and my mum to get through and there was a bit of elongated eye contact.. So 14 year old me is in love obviously, then we get back on the bus and we start playing footsie or whatever (this sounds so cringe but it was magical under all the stars and it being dark on the bus).

At the second stop, my mum stays on the bus and I go out by myself. I’m staring at the stars (no northern lights but the stars alone were INSANE, no light pollution at all). All of a sudden I hear a hello, and then ALL of a sudden I have headphones being put on my head, and then this magical mantra starts playing… I stood there looking up at the stars and this song was on, I memorised the lyrics instantly and it was in my head the whole night afterwards.. We then spoke on the third stop and had a little holiday romance and now we just have eachother on Facebook hahahaha.

I don’t know, but the moment was just so magical, and for this to be the song playing it just makes me think about how beautiful life can be and how special these moments really are.. And now I have what feels like a spiritual connection to this song !!

It was the song of my teenage depression years. I used to love playing it on my piano and sing along, it soothed me. Still brings tears to my eyes 15 years later.
