On the four original songs, he addresses the wrong turns of βStreet Life,β violent tendencies in βWar,β love for his late grandmother in βBroken Linkβ and equality in βBorn To Be Free.β Hitting on topics with which many can identify or understand, the penetrating song βStreet Life,β produced by CoLa, became an immediate hit on Toronto's urban radio station Flow 93.5 FM. The track made it to #1 within weeks, and held its place at the top for four consecutive weeks!
ββStreet Lifeβ is my own experience with some people I hang around with, the things I see happening here in Canada,β explains Obie. βIn Jamaica, itβs a different way of life down there and to come up here and see that people are suffering from the same things that we are suffering from there, and they have all these opportunities, but theyβre still on the street trying, itβs understandable because some people arenβt coming from the best homes. They donβt have role models to look up to. I touch on all of that in the song.β
Born Mohanza Kelly in Jamaica, he was nicknamed βObieβ by his grandfather who won a Derby bet with a racehorse named Obie Wan Kenobi and declared his young grandson a good luck charm. His upbringing wasnβt privileged, but he didnβt know any better. βI just took it how it came,β he says.
Obie grew up in the church and has strong Christian beliefs, wanting to make a difference. He started singing in the church, eventually leading his youth choir, but he was also drawn to dancehall, soul and reggae music. βThe message in reggae songs is something that I can relate to my own life,β says Obie. βBack in Jamaica, we were barely making ends meet and thatβs what reggae music is β you sing about the struggles that people go through.β
In 2001, at age 16, Obieβs mother, who was already living in Toronto, brought him and his sister to Canada. He had graduated from high school in Jamaica and planned to go to university here, but discovered that the system didnβt acknowledge Jamaican education as equal. Obie had to return to grade 10 and was understandably discouraged. βI started falling off,β he admits. βSo I surrounded myself with music to get my life back on track.β
Obie soon found out about Central Tech high school, which had a remarkable music program, including two in-house recording studios on which to learn. He transferred mid semester from another school in Rexdale and immersed himself in recording engineering. βIβd hang around the studio and learn stuff in the environment,β he says. βBeing in Canada, I saw the different possibilities for things that I could do with myself and I started reflecting.β Obie cut some tracks at Central Tech, including βKeep The Dream Aliveβ to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. After graduating from Central Tech he worked at The Remix Project, a government-funded studio which allows up-and-comers to sign up, come in for an interview process, and get approval to record there for free. There, he cut such tracks as βStreet Life,β βWarβ and βOne In A Million.β Now he is an audio engineer at Toronto studio The Loft, where he finished up his debut EP, taking βWarβ and βStreet Lifeβ and combining them with βBroken Linkβ and βBorn To Be Free.β
βWarβ is a killer dancehall-flavoured reggae-based track featuring rapper Krymes. βI can only write about the environment I see. Every summer is like a season for violence,β Obie says of the lyrical inspiration. βAs soon as the weather gets a little warm, people start getting crazy. So the way I approached the track is βWhy is this happening, people walking on the street beefing on each other for no reason?ββ
βBroken Link,β he wrote for his grandma who passed away in 1998 in Jamaica. βI still have trouble with it because I grew up with her,β he says. βShe was my mentor, my mother, everything in one. She would really look out for me and when she passed I wasnβt even there. I was coming from school and it was tragic the way I found out and it stuck with me. Itβs saying if I get the chance to meet her again, how much I would tell her I love her.β
For βBorn To Be Free,β Obie sampled Martin Luther King Jr.βs "I Have A Dream" speech and used snippets throughout the song. βHeβs saying everybodyβs one, we should be able to fight together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that one day weβll be free β thatβs the parts of his speech I used,β says Obie.
And Obie too, even at 23, would like to make a difference. βAs a person and as a musician, Iβm a big advocate of humanitarian acts. I think my purpose is to help the less fortunate in any way I can and use music as a tool to really get to them, as a medium to communicate with them,β says Obie. βSo I see myself in the future owning some enterprises, but at the same time Iβm going to go back to my home country or to Africa or wherever help is needed and try and set up a studio. Iβm trying to use music as a tool to promote positive change.β

'Cause you know I know you
Yeah, I know you
Last time I saw you, you was brewed up, booed up
Ready for a new fuck, last time you saw me
I was P I to the motherfucking M P, what
And lately I heard you's a broke bitch
And lately the word is I live in a suburb
And I don't fuck with birds
She used to pump on the block
Sell a nigga' rocks, bail a nigga' out but
She tried to plot on a nigga'
Vacant lot, one shot, bitch died, go figure
He used to pay this bitch, gave her lots of shit
Fuck's wrong with this nigga' man?
He used to bring through the hood
Treat the bitch to fuckin' good, my opinion
We used to blaze with the bitch
Faded off the lick, she x-rayed the clip
This nigga bought braids for the bitch
Louis Vuitton kicks and tricked on suck shit
Meanwhile in the hood, she drivin' around good
This bitch thinks she in Hollywood
Meantime she settin' the nigga' up
Tellin' us, what his stuff
She's ready to get him stuck, what
Thick thighs but she full of surprises
I swear this bitch is Shady
(That's what I know)
Sex on her mind, all the time
And you think that that's your baby
(You don't know)
You a good guy that's livin' a lie
But she dove and played your safety
(It's what I know)
If you cool and she satisfied
How come that bitch just paged me?
(You don't know)
We had to ride on a nigga'
Watch him for the right time to get richer
We decided when the hit was
Run up on him, forty-five in the ribs, what
This nigga' screamed like a bitch
Showed us what his shit hit her
Hell of a lick but the bitch
Who told us 'bout the bricks
Exposed us to the nigga'
He knew that we'd come
But meanwhile in his hood
His niggaz is suitin' up
And Timbed, looted up
Rims and new trucks your man, 'Livin' It Up'
Then a van with no hubs
Suddenly pulled up and erupt
Shot a nigga', the fuck up
Just my luck, the bitch got us both touched
It's like a rush, the bitch who blushed
And smoked blunts wit us
Turned out to be nuts, switched up
Mixed up wit the wrong slut
Got my friend zipped up in the bag, it's all bad
My niggaz got my back, in fact they caught
On her Ave, flossin' in another nigga' cab
Thick thighs but she full of surprises
I swear this bitch is Shady
(That's what I know)
Sex on her mind, all the time
And you think that that's your baby
(You don't know)
You a good guy that's livin' a lie
But she dove and played your safety
(It's what I know)
If you cool and she satisfied
How come that bitch just paged me?
(You don't know)
The setup is a story of betrayal and violence set to a hip-hop beat. Obie Trice describes an attractive woman he knows who is always up to something, and the last time he saw her, she was with her new man. The woman used to be a drug dealer and would bail out her clients, and even though Trice used to hang out with her and smoke weed, he now knows she is not to be trusted. She sets up Trice's friend and him, leading to a violent ending where Trice's friend dies, and Trice is left to face the consequences. The song shows how dangerous it is to be involved with people who cannot be trusted.
