Obituary is listed by Nielsen Soundscan as the fifth best-selling death metal band of all time and their albums have sold 368,184 copies. Their 1992 release "The End Complete" has also more than 103,378 copies in the United States alone.
After 1997's Back from the Dead album, the band had grown tired of touring which led to the band disbanding. During the hiatus, Donald Tardy played in Andrew W.K.'s touring band (during W.K.'s appearance on Saturday Night Live Tardy wore an Obituary shirt). Allen West focused on his two projects, Lowbrow and Six Feet Under while not playing in Obituary. Trevor Peres formed Catastrophic in 2001. The band reformed in 2003 and Catastrophic continued to exist alongside the reformed Obituary. Catastrophic released one album, The Cleansing, in 2001. Obituary's reunion album, Frozen in Time was released in 2005. The band's first live DVD, "Frozen Alive", was released in January of 2007.
Obituary are currently signed to Candlelight Records for their seventh album Xecutioner's Return, which was released on August 28, 2007.
Obituary's guitarist, Allen West, was recently imprisoned for D.U.I. (driving under the influence of alcohol) and released in January 2008. During his incarceration, Ralph Santolla served as West's replacement. It is uncertain at this time whether or not West will be returning to the band.

Burned In
Obituary Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Where we create
Fool me your life
Set in World Demise
Lots to define
Follow the bodies there
Living in the past
Said so, as cold as the wind
Blind fool
We overkill
Chopped at the throat
Chorus:
Set in Burned In, Rot away
Set in Burned In, Killed away
Burned In, Life of Hell
Have to survive
Without fears of grave
Lives left to die
Where to? says the mind
You're first to die
The lyrics of "Burned In" by Obituary reflect a sense of despair and hopelessness in a world where everything seems destined for destruction. The song opens with an invitation to come and join the singer in a world of creation, but it is quickly clear that this is a world where one's fate is already decided. The refrain echoes the idea that this fate is "Burned In", which suggests something permanent and inescapable.
The lyrics suggest that there is a lot to define and understand about the world we live in, but ultimately it is a dark and unforgiving place. The singer encourages the listener to follow the bodies, which may suggest the need to confront the reality of death and decay in order to truly understand what is at stake. There is a sense of living in the past and being cut off from the present, something that is as cold and unfeeling as the wind.
The chorus is particularly bleak, with a catalogue of different ways in which one can be consumed by the world. The words "rot away", "killed away", and "life of hell" all suggest that there is no escape from suffering and death. Yet despite everything, there is a call to survive without fear and to face the unknown with courage. Ultimately, "Burned In" is a powerful meditation on the human condition in a world that is always threatening to destroy us.

Still my fave death metal band. D. Tardy is the sickest death metal percussionist. He is on a par with Dave Lomabrdo, Charlie Benante, Corey Pierce, Jordan Mancino, Jason Costa and Igor Cavalera.
