Obituary is listed by Nielsen Soundscan as the fifth best-selling death metal band of all time and their albums have sold 368,184 copies. Their 1992 release "The End Complete" has also more than 103,378 copies in the United States alone.
After 1997's Back from the Dead album, the band had grown tired of touring which led to the band disbanding. During the hiatus, Donald Tardy played in Andrew W.K.'s touring band (during W.K.'s appearance on Saturday Night Live Tardy wore an Obituary shirt). Allen West focused on his two projects, Lowbrow and Six Feet Under while not playing in Obituary. Trevor Peres formed Catastrophic in 2001. The band reformed in 2003 and Catastrophic continued to exist alongside the reformed Obituary. Catastrophic released one album, The Cleansing, in 2001. Obituary's reunion album, Frozen in Time was released in 2005. The band's first live DVD, "Frozen Alive", was released in January of 2007.
Obituary are currently signed to Candlelight Records for their seventh album Xecutioner's Return, which was released on August 28, 2007.
Obituary's guitarist, Allen West, was recently imprisoned for D.U.I. (driving under the influence of alcohol) and released in January 2008. During his incarceration, Ralph Santolla served as West's replacement. It is uncertain at this time whether or not West will be returning to the band.

Obituary Lyrics

Find the words and go beyond
Search for the word to find
Just follow me and redefine
Redefine
This will be the constant fear
Falls into the searching light
Falls to the bottom of this blind
Kill for the sacred one
Find the words and go beyond
Seach for the word to find
Just follow me and redefine
Redefine
This will be the constant fear
That goes beyond the life-dead trail
Falls into the searching light
Falls to the bottom of this blind
Finding the word
Please be the word
???
Wretched torture death dismay
Feed off the ones that go unto you
Finding the ones are sacred to you
Killing the souls and fighting the dead
We are the ones the coming of dread
The coming of dread
???
The temple which will do no good
The beast before will show you should
Search for the word to find
That penetrates the re-align
Redefine
This will be the constant fear
That goes beyond the life-dead trail
Falls into the searching light
Falls to the bottom of this blind
Search for the word to find
Just follow Me and redefine
The lyrics of Obituary's song Redefine are reflective of the band's inclination towards death metal. The opening line "Killing for the sacred one" hints towards the idea of sacrificing one's life for a higher purpose or an entity, which in this case could be death or darkness. The song talks about going beyond the mundane and venturing into the unknown territories of life and death. It is an invitation to the listeners to search for the hidden meaning and connect with the underlying themes of the song.
The chorus "Search for the word to find / Just follow me and redefine / Redefine" suggests that there is a need to redefine the commonly accepted notions and beliefs that bind humanity. It is a call to break free from the constraints of social, religious and cultural norms and embrace something more profound and unsettling. The line "This will be the constant fear / That goes beyond the life-dead trail / Falls into the searching light / Falls to the bottom of this blind" talks about the struggle to overcome the fear of the unknown and experience something beyond the physical realm.
Overall, the song Redefine is a reflection of the band's fascination with the darker aspects of life and death. The lyrics provide a glimpse of their nihilistic worldview and a desire to shatter the existing norms and beliefs.
