Obituary is listed by Nielsen Soundscan as the fifth best-selling death metal band of all time and their albums have sold 368,184 copies. Their 1992 release "The End Complete" has also more than 103,378 copies in the United States alone.
After 1997's Back from the Dead album, the band had grown tired of touring which led to the band disbanding. During the hiatus, Donald Tardy played in Andrew W.K.'s touring band (during W.K.'s appearance on Saturday Night Live Tardy wore an Obituary shirt). Allen West focused on his two projects, Lowbrow and Six Feet Under while not playing in Obituary. Trevor Peres formed Catastrophic in 2001. The band reformed in 2003 and Catastrophic continued to exist alongside the reformed Obituary. Catastrophic released one album, The Cleansing, in 2001. Obituary's reunion album, Frozen in Time was released in 2005. The band's first live DVD, "Frozen Alive", was released in January of 2007.
Obituary are currently signed to Candlelight Records for their seventh album Xecutioner's Return, which was released on August 28, 2007.
Obituary's guitarist, Allen West, was recently imprisoned for D.U.I. (driving under the influence of alcohol) and released in January 2008. During his incarceration, Ralph Santolla served as West's replacement. It is uncertain at this time whether or not West will be returning to the band.

Solid State
Obituary Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Deems real the shadows of the door
Set falls thru the halls of time
There dwells landfill's crime
You ask how ? Solid State !
Kill for the need sick lost time
Bury graves fill beyond lies
Deep bruise falling to die
You ask how ? Solid State !
Rot around pray their coming for you
The one to die predecessor
Taking the souls and trade what we want
The fabric of life we dont know deciding
Go to the place of sacrifice
With the jewels preventing access
Above with land kills battery
Encircle the weak preparing the souls of life
Rot around pray their coming for you
The one to die predecessor
Taking the souls and trade what we want
This fabric of life we take your blood or please take your blight and pain

You ask how ? Solid State !
Live for the pain cause dies for
Deems real the shadows of the door
Set falls thru the halls of time
There dwells landfill's crime
You ask how ? Solid State !
Live for the cause pain dies for
Deems real the shadows of the door
Solid State !
The song Solid State by Obituary is a heavy-metal track that seems to explore themes of pain, sacrifice, and the unknown forces that govern life and death. The lyrics hint at a dark reality that lies beneath the surface of our daily lives, where human beings are caught in a cycle of suffering and sacrifice. The lines "Live for the cause pain dies for" and "Kill for the need sick lost time" suggest that people are willing to endure tremendous pain and suffering in order to achieve some greater purpose or goal, even if that purpose is not entirely clear. The lyrics also make reference to "the fabric of life," which seems to be some kind of mystical force that shapes our destinies and determines our fates.
The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "You ask how? Solid State!" which suggests that the "solid state" is somehow responsible for the dark forces that drive human behavior. The meaning of this phrase is left ambiguous, but it seems to imply that there is some kind of hidden power or force that controls the world around us. The lines "Deep bruise falling to die" and "encircle the weak preparing the souls of life" suggest that this power is malevolent and actively seeks to harm people.
Overall, the lyrics of Solid State are cryptic and open to interpretation, but they seem to suggest that there is a dark side to human nature that is driven by forces outside of our control. The song is full of dark imagery and suggests that there are hidden forces at work in the world that we can never fully understand.
