Obituary is listed by Nielsen Soundscan as the fifth best-selling death metal band of all time and their albums have sold 368,184 copies. Their 1992 release "The End Complete" has also more than 103,378 copies in the United States alone.
After 1997's Back from the Dead album, the band had grown tired of touring which led to the band disbanding. During the hiatus, Donald Tardy played in Andrew W.K.'s touring band (during W.K.'s appearance on Saturday Night Live Tardy wore an Obituary shirt). Allen West focused on his two projects, Lowbrow and Six Feet Under while not playing in Obituary. Trevor Peres formed Catastrophic in 2001. The band reformed in 2003 and Catastrophic continued to exist alongside the reformed Obituary. Catastrophic released one album, The Cleansing, in 2001. Obituary's reunion album, Frozen in Time was released in 2005. The band's first live DVD, "Frozen Alive", was released in January of 2007.
Obituary are currently signed to Candlelight Records for their seventh album Xecutioner's Return, which was released on August 28, 2007.
Obituary's guitarist, Allen West, was recently imprisoned for D.U.I. (driving under the influence of alcohol) and released in January 2008. During his incarceration, Ralph Santolla served as West's replacement. It is uncertain at this time whether or not West will be returning to the band.

Obituary Lyrics

Live to die city grave
Found that life wont pay
With ...
What's wrong with your mind
Kill thoughts set Me ...
I dont care to go
Just leave Me to die
Face scorn to be as one
We fall and set for discard
Do what the numbers say
To see the ways and forces
They like to see Me die
.. like riches for
Step forth to be my lord
To be my lord
.. reach his fall
Set for to be My ...
Even need time to spill
..
We found the killing bone
..
Found to expose the waste
Disrespecting future change
Face scorn live for dying
Face scorn to be as one
We fall and set for discard
Do what the numbers say
The lyrics of Obituary's song "Splattered" convey a hopeless and nihilistic outlook on life, where the individual feels trapped and undervalued by society. The song starts with a line "Pay for me to go", implying that the singer feels like a burden on those around them and that they would rather not exist. The next line, "Live to die city grave", suggests that their life is predetermined to be pointless and futile. This sentiment is reinforced in the following line, "Found that life wont pay", which indicates that despite trying, the singer has realized that they cannot "make it" in this world.
The line "What's wrong with your mind, kill thoughts set me" highlights the mental anguish the singer is experiencing, with the message being that their struggles are a result of others projecting their negativity onto them. The final verse repeats the phrase "face scorn live for dying", implying that the singer feels like they are being punished for simply being alive. The song ends with the line "Do what the numbers say", suggesting that in this society, individuals are only valued for their material worth and their ability to contribute to the economy.
Overall, the song's lyrics paint a bleak picture of life and its inherent struggles. The singer is unable to find meaning or purpose in their existence and is weighed down by the expectations and judgments of others. The song suggests that in this world, individuals are expendable, and their value is measured solely by their economic output.
