The Circle
Ocean Colour Scene Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Saturday afternoon
The sunshine pours like wine
Through the window

And I know golden June
Can turn an empty gray
Against your window
And I feel like I'm on the outside
Of the circle

If I walk by the trees
I'll catch the falling leaves
If the wind blows

But I know all this means is
Whiling on the hours
Watching sideshows

And I feel like I'm on the outside
Of the circle

Will I turn my coat to the rain
I don't know
But I'm going somewhere I can warm my bones

Fare you well I'll carry me away
And sing to those I know
Upon their birthdays

And I won't feel like I'm on the outside
I wont feel like I'm on the outside

I wont feel like I'm on the outside
Of the circle

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ocean Colour Scene's song The Circle paint a vivid image of a lazy Saturday afternoon in June. The warm sunshine streams into the room, infusing it with a golden light. However, there is an underlying sense of sadness and isolation present in the lyrics. The singer feels like he is on the outside of the circle, excluded from the happy activities happening around him. He longs to be a part of the festivities, to catch the falling leaves and watch the sideshows. But he is unable to connect with the people in the circle, feeling like an outsider.

The second half of the lyrics express a yearning to break free from this feeling of exclusion. The singer decides to leave, to go somewhere where he can warm his bones and find comfort. He promises to sing to those he knows on their birthdays, suggesting a desire to connect with his loved ones on a deeper level. By the end of the song, the singer has found a way to belong and is no longer on the outside of the circle.

Overall, the lyrics of The Circle communicate a universal sense of loneliness and the longing for human connection. The imagery of the golden June day highlights the beauty of life, but also shows how it can feel hollow if we are unable to share it with others. The song's message is ultimately one of hope, encouraging listeners to seek out the warmth and companionship they need to feel part of the circle.

Saturday
Afternoon, the sunshine
Pours like wine
Through your window
And I know
Golden June can turn
An empty gray
Against your window
And I feel like
I'm on the outside
Of the circle
If I walk
(If I walk, if I walk)
By the trees
I'll catch the falling leaves
If the wind blows
But I know
(But I know, but I know)
All this means
Is whiling on the hours
Watching side shows
And I feel like
I'm on the outside
Of the circle
Will I turn my coat to the rain
I don't know
But I'm goin'
Somewhere I can
Warm my bones
Fare you well
(Fare you, fare you well)
Carry me away
And sing for those
I know upon their birthdays
I won't feel like
I'm on the outside
I won't feel like
I'm on the outside
I won't feel like
I'm on the outside
Of the circle

Paul Weller did a good version

Chris Hayworth

Ocean Colour Scene had really bad luck because of the Madchester scene and the usual shit in London.

Beta Music

Their problem was their sound was too unfashionable for the cool kids of the 90s. Yes, their music was brilliant, yes it was superior to Blur and Oasis, undoubtedly. But it was dated, so was never going to beat the cooler sounds in the pop charts.

Turning 18, Ben Sherman Shirts, friends, freedom and alcohol. The 90s were the best years to be young. Now I’m the tragic 40 + years old man that I despised back then.
