Music For A Nurse
Oceansize Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And a piece of the pictures bitten right out of the middle
I'm alone and thinner I feel
Is this a prayer?
Anaesthetise me just til you return
I feel the loss like a squandered opportunity to whisper
You're all I ever needed.

Shapes fall into place
For once in your life you make
A clean breakaway.

And did you know that everything you touch is blessed and all the richer
For your love a better being
And if I display just a fraction of the soul you showed in this world
Then I know I'll see you again

Love so much to give
And too few to share it with
Wastes you away.

The dream it comes again and again
You're here
It's you
I pull you close and
Hold you tight
Into the sky you go
You go

And I can't change it
I can't change it.

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of Oceansize's "Music For A Nurse" is a melancholic reflection on loss and loneliness. The imagery of "a piece of the pictures bitten right out of the middle" is a fitting description for the feeling of being incomplete after losing someone. The singer feels thinner and more alone than before, and wonders if their pain is worthy of being called a prayer. The use of the verb "anaesthetise" suggests a desire to numb the pain until the return of the one who is missed. The line "You're all I ever needed" is a heartbreaking acknowledgement of the importance of the absent person.

The second stanza shifts to a more positive tone, with the idea of things falling into place and making a clean breakaway. The lyrics suggest that the missing person had a positive impact on everything they touched, blessing it and making it richer. The singer aspires to display just a fraction of the soul the missing person had in this world. The last three lines of this stanza are an admission that the missing person had love to give but few to share it with, a waste that ended up consuming them.

The final stanza describes a recurring dream where the missing person is still present, and the singer can hold them close and tight. However, the dream ends with the person "going into the sky," an irreversible departure. The final two lines are a heartbreaking admission that the singer cannot change what has happened, and must accept the pain.

My brother and I accompanied our grandmother on her last day in her deathbed, spending what time we could with her. She muttered underneath her words that she'd like 2 cups of jello. My brother came back with 'em, opened it and held out a spoonful for her. In her delirious state, dehydrated past the point of exhaustion, she shook her head, saying 'no, no, no.' She pointed at us and said, "They're for you."

This song is about these angels who have blessed our lives, and so dearly are you angels missed. God bless you, Oceansize.

I used to listen to this song in 2009. I don't know why it never became more famous. Put it in a famous movie or serie and it will be 20M views in days. Goes to show that there are so many artists and songs out there that people will never know about. Like an ocean (size)
