Satisfied
Odds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Add it to the list of square-jawed decisions I refuse to make for the same reason
San Franciscans don't leave on account of an earthquake
There are textbook moves and trails to blaze
No shortage of advice
So I'm blindly staying put
Like a deer caught in the headlights

[Chorus]
After all these songs, (I'm satisfied)
I could be horribly wrong; (I'm satisfied)
Till disaster comes along, (I'm satisfied)

Taken in the back to get my ear chewing
Better that than learn
They'll be wiping simple smiles off my face
Until it's someone else's turn
I like the smell and endure the taste
Of everything that's cheaper
And when he asks me, "Did you have a good time?"
I'll say, "Get the lights, Mr. Grim Reaper"

[Chorus]

Turn on the reading light
As the room brings in the night
Completely wasted time is the time that I like

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Odds’ song “Satisfied” delves into the theme of indecision, as the singer reflects on the many choices and pieces of advice that he has been given, but ultimately remains stationary and uncertain about what course of action to take. The use of the metaphor “deer caught in the headlights” emphasizes his hesitation and vulnerability in the face of potentially negative outcomes. The chorus presents a sense of resignation, as the singer repeats the phrase “I’m satisfied” while acknowledging the possibility of being “horribly wrong” and anticipating a future disaster. This suggests that the singer has become complacent and resigned to his current state, rather than actively pursuing change or improvement.

In the second verse, the singer reflects on his experience of being taken “in the back to get my ear chewing”, a situation in which he is forced to endure unpleasant or painful circumstances. He contrasts this with the pleasure he takes in experiencing things that are “cheaper”, suggesting a self-destructive tendency or lack of self-worth. The repeated mention of “Mr. Grim Reaper” in both verses implies a fear of death or mortality, perhaps reinforcing the singer’s reluctance to take risks or make big decisions. The final lines of the song, “Completely wasted time is the time that I like”, seem to confirm this self-destructive tendency and suggest a lack of hope or motivation.

"After all these songs, (I'm satisfied)
I could be horribly wrong; (I'm satisfied)
Till disaster comes along, (I'm satisfied)"

If I look at Chinese writing, it is meaningless to me.

Until 2003 most everything was meaningless. And everything has become more and more meaningful since then. Except for the couple times I was drugged in 2010 and 2018.

When the odds song came out in 95, I wasn't thinking ANY songs.

I think I phoned sun FM and requested Ron Larson play this song and he said 'no.'

Great song.
