Say My Name
Odesza Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I wanna go so what'd you say
When you gonna let me know
If you give a damn about me
'Cause you got my hands tied
In my defense I always fall for confidence
And your compliments look good on me

'Cause nobody knows it better
Than the girl in the corner with the scarlet letter
And while you're watching
You may think that she doesn't matter
But no one knows you better, oh yeah

I wanna dance, I wanna dance with you
So take a chance, take a chance, oh yeah
I wanna dance, I wanna dance with you
So take a chance, take a chance, oh yeah
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
Oh yeah

I need a sign or a signal
I've overthought everything I can think of into symbol
I need the coat and your jacket
And the remnants of your cigarette packet

I wanna go so what'd you say
When you gonna let me know
If you give a damn about me
'Cause you got my hands tied
In my defense I always fall for confidence
And your compliments look good on me

'Cause nobody knows it better
Than the girl in the corner with the scarlet letter
And while you're watching
You may think that she doesn't matter
But no one knows you better

I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance with you
So take a chance, take a chance, oh yeah
I wanna dance, I wanna dance, I wanna dance with you
I wanna dance, I wanna dance, oh yeah
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
Oh yeah

Oh yeah
Oh yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Say My Name" by ODESZA revolve around the theme of a person longing to express their feelings to someone else, but feeling trapped and unable to do so. The song's narrator is tired of waiting for a sign or a signal from the person they are interested in, and wants to know if they really "give a damn" about them. The frustration is evident, but the lyrics suggest that the singer has fallen for the person's confidence and compliments despite everything.

The second half of the song shifts to the desire to dance with the person, implying that physical connection might be the only way to break through the barriers between them. The singer sees themselves as the girl in the corner with the scarlet letter, someone who is being judged or overlooked by others, but still has a connection to the person they desire. The song's upbeat tempo contrasts with the melancholic lyrics, creating a sense of wanting more but being unable to achieve it.

Overall, "Say My Name" is a powerful exploration of desire, frustration, and the struggle to connect with another person.

This song is like a strange mixture of nostalgia, sad times, happy memories, and good vibes. It's hard to describe, but I'm sure y'all get it.

Went ODESZA's concert in last summer with my "crush" (was way more than just crush). The first song they played was this. Still remember the awesome performance they've showed that night. I really felt alive when I was there. Unfortunately the relationship didn't go well, we are separated like nothing happened. But every time I play this, It reminds me that magical night. That melancholic emotions..
