Odyssey Lyrics

Runnin' pretty, New York City girl (twenty-five, thirty-five)
Hello, baby, New York City girl

You grew up ridin' the subways, running with people
Up in Harlem, down on Broadway
You're no tramp, but you're no lady, talkin' that street talk
You're the heart and soul of New York City
And love, love is just a passing word
It's the thought you had in a taxi cab that got left on the curb
When he dropped you off and he stated firm

Oh, oh, oh (oh, oh, oh)
You're a native New Yorker
You should know the score by now (you should know by now)
You're a native New Yorker

(New York, ooh, ooh, ooh)

Music plays, everyone's dancin' closer and closer
Makin' friends and findin' lovers
There you are lost in the shadows, searchin' for someone (searchin' for someone)
To set you free from New York City

And, whoa, where did all those yesterdays go
When you still believed love could really be like a Broadway show
You are the star, win the applause

Oh, oh, oh (oh, oh, oh)
You're a native New Yorker
No one opens the door
For a native New Yorker

(Runnin' pretty, New York City girl)

Where did all those yesterdays go
When you still believed love could really be like a Broadway show
You're the star

You're a native New Yorker
You should know the score by now
You're a native New Yorker

You should know the score, you should know the score by now
You're a native New Yorker, oh, oh, oh (native, native, native, native New Yorker)
You're a native New Yorker

You're a native New Yorker
You should know the score (native, native, native, native New Yorker)
You're a native New Yorker

What you waitin' for, no one opens the door (you're a native New Yorker)
For a native, for a native New Yorker

Overall Meaning

The song "Native New Yorker" by Odyssey is a tribute to the energy, diversity, and vibrancy of New York City. The lyrics describe a woman who has grown up in the city, living and breathing its hustle and bustle, its culture and people. She is tough and street-smart, but also searching for something more, someone to set her free from the fast-paced life of the city.

The song speaks to the idea of being a native New Yorker and what that means, both in terms of the excitement and opportunities that come with living in the city, and the challenges and heartaches that can also be part of the experience. The chorus, "You're a native New Yorker, you should know the score by now," suggests that the woman has lived through enough to understand what the city is all about, but also implies that there is always more to discover and learn.

The use of the phrases "running pretty" and "no tramp but you're no lady" also speaks to the idea of being a confident and strong woman, who can hold her own in any situation. This, coupled with the image of the woman searching for love and connection, creates a complex and nuanced portrait of life in the city.

As a Native New Yorker, and a musicologist, let me say, this is the best disco song ever written!! The arrangement is superior, lots of jazz elements, a not so dumb story line.

The great Gene Page did the arrangements and was a very popular orchestrator in the 70’s. He did work for Barry White, Elton John and many other artists. How about a “thumbs up” for Gene Page!!

this is by far my all-time favorite disco song. it is a true classic. many people dismissed disco as mindless fluff. this song should prove them all wrong. the arrangement is perfect. the strings are gorgeous. the lyrics are great. many songs of that era were more popular and sold more copies, but this in an under-rated gem, standing right alongside the classics like hot stuff & staying alive. I LOVE IT!!!!

That's right! Plus the hands clapping to the beat, also the finger snapping! The big band sound mixed with the Spanish Harlem flavor.

In late 1977, this song flew up the charts and made a big splash in Europe also. Long before Alicia Keys sung about the glories of New York, this group, made up of 2 sisters of Virgin Islands parentage, busted out with this hot tune. The sisters reside back home as I type. Here's Odyssey with, "Native New Yorker."

Thank you for providing this! I host the longest running disco show in the world. I play all styles of disco from the late 1950's right to today. All that said there is lrge part of my heart still passionately wrapped around great American disco from the 1970's and early 1980's. Songs like this gem keep me alive inside. I will play this on my show (THE GROOVE on ckcufm.com) sometime this year, mixing with records from my Odyssey collection. All the best.
