03 From Finner
Of Monsters and Men Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We came here on his back
And we caught your eye
The salty ocean wind
Made the seagulls cry
The rocking of his house
Had me holding on
But I knew that I was safe
From there on out

And the waves that hit his face
Marked the past
And the the farrows on his skin
Oh, how time goes fast

And we are far from home, but we're so happy
Far from home, all alone, but we're so happy

After every sunny day
Came a stormy night
That's when Finner would say
Keep your heads held high

And we are far from home, but we're so happy
Far from home, all alone, but we're so happy

And we are far from home, but we're so happy
Far from home, all alone, but we're so happy

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Of Monsters and Men's "03 From Finner" tell a story of the singer's journey on the back of Finner, possibly a vessel sailing on the rough seas. The salty ocean wind and the cry of the seagulls set the scene, creating imagery of the vast, open sea. However, despite the roughness of the journey, the singer feels safe, holding on tight to Finner's house. The marks on Finner's face and skin, caused by the sea's waves, serve as reminders of the past and how fast time goes.

The chorus of the song emphasizes that the singer is far from home but still happy, possibly indicating that the journey is fulfilling or that they have a sense of freedom or purpose. The second verse adds more depth to the story, presenting the idea that after every happy moment, there is always the possibility of a storm to follow. However, Finner's words of encouragement, telling them to keep their heads held high, seem to lift their spirits and help them stay focused on the journey.

Line by Line Meaning

We came here on his back
We traveled to this place on a man's back

And we caught your eye
We captured your attention

The salty ocean wind
The briny ocean breeze

Made the seagulls cry
The wind caused the gulls to produce a high-pitch sound

The rocking of his house
The movements of the man's dwelling place

Had me holding on
For me to keep from falling, I had to clutch on

But I knew that I was safe
However, I was certain that I was out of danger

From there on out
From that moment, it continued like that

And the waves that hit his face
The water surges that struck him

Marked the past
Indicated previous difficulties

And the the farrows on his skin
The lines and wrinkles on his skin

Oh, how time goes fast
Oh, how swiftly time moves

After every sunny day
Once every bright day

Came a stormy night
Came a tempestuous night

That's when Finner would say
That was Finner's moment to speak

Keep your heads held high
Stay motivated, maintain a positive attitude

And we are far from home, but we're so happy
We are a long way from our native land, yet we're overjoyed

Far from home, all alone, but we're so happy
We are far away from our loved ones, yet still content

And we are far from home, but we're so happy
We are in a far-off location, but filled with happiness

Far from home, all alone, but we're so happy
We are remote, deprived of companionship, but ecstatic

I know this is a lyrics video, but since it can be harder to sing along when you only get one word at a time:

We came here on his back
And we caught your eye
The salty ocean wind
Made the seagulls cry
The rocking of his house
Had me holding on
But I knew that I was safe
From there on out

And the waves that hit his face
Marked the past
And the the farrows on his skin
Oh, how time goes fast

And we are far from home, but we're so happy
Far from home, all alone, but we're so happy

After every sunny day
Came a stormy night
That's when Finner would say
Keep your heads held high
And we are far from home, but we're so happy

Far from home, all alone, but we're so happy
And we are far from home, but we're so happy
Far from home, all alone, but we're so happy

Why do you guys have to accentuate the beat, chill out, you guys have it but you can't keep on doing the same beat, throw it away.  You are doing the same song over and over.  Little Talks is great.  It is original is your best but the rest is just an echo, get the woman singer a little drunk or something and let it loose.

Its Lyngbakr a whale-like monster that lived in the sea and baited seafarers by pretending to be an island and then it drowned them. Its from Icelandic mythology

Reply · 39

Rowan Warwick 1 year ago

+Izamar Ibarra actually almost every civilization with Norse roots (Iceland was a colony) has a story with a fish/island that drowns you but this one is nice

+Izamar Ibarra Monster? Gah, he's looking sweet. But, I wanted to say, that at the moment, he's bigger than biggest ship on Earth. And maybe Titanic didn't hit ice. May it could be a Lyngbakr. I like monsters and whales. And Whale-monsters.

+Queen Lionheart ,nice...One of the reasons why I love Of Monsters & Men is the fact that they seem proud of their Norse roots...It makes them stand out in the folk scene, because most of folk artists and bands follow ( or at least, try to) Bob Dylan's style, and paying tribute to their Norse roots gives to their songs an medieval and epic touch that the ones who follow the "modern troubadour" style -- that was Dylan's mark -- doesn't have...

@OMaMaRMY

Ive been having LITTLE TALKS with myself BENEATH MY BED, waiting over SIX WEEKS for this song that I LOVE LOVE LOVE. This video deserves to be seen by well over a THOUSAND EYES... This is one of those songs you can feel deep in YOUR BONES. Weather it's a hike up BLUEBERRY MOUNTAIN, or a visit to your BACKYARD, this song will embed itself into your ORGANS, your heart, brain etc... This is my WINTER SOUND, my MOUNTAIN SOUND, my EMPIRE. This is my YELLOW LIGHT in an ocean of BLACK WATER, because I am only HUMAN, WE all SINK I am a SINKING MAN. It's a SLOW LIFE, and I move SLOW AND STEADY

a PHANTOM follows me as I stare at the SKELETONS covered with ice CRYSTALS near my LAKEHOUSE. I blaze my illegal NUMB BEARS to try and escape the pain as I enter a deep deep SLOOM. I want to be in HAWAII, I want to have this HAPPY SONG with me. I feel this HUNGER, like WOLVES WITHOUT TEETH do. Their DIRTY PAWS follow their KING AND LIONHEART, searching for the I OF THE STORM.

I picture SILHOUETTES of A BOY AND A BIRD, floating on PARTICLES. The boy, JOSIE, is playing with SUGAR IN A BOWL, sadly singing "WERE GETTING OLDER"

This is the power of this song...

Tradução:
Nós viemos em suas costas
E chamamos sua atenção
O vento salgado do oceano
Fez as gaivotas chorarem

I don't know ifanyone will read this. But I just want to say when I was in the Navy I went on a 6 month deployment to the china sea on an aircraft carrier. It was a very stressful time and I felt like I would be trapped on that ship forever.
This song used to give me hope, I listened to it everyday. Knowing I would see a shore again, though I may not know which one. And I found peace and felt that though I was "far from home" in the "salty waves" with jets flying over my head, I was happy. Listening to it now, far from the Navy. I can look back with fondness and renewed strength, knowing I persevered through a difficult time. Thanks OMAM, for an oasis amidst chaos. <3
