Crystals
Of Monsters and Men Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lost in skies of powdered gold
Caught in clouds of silver ropes
Showered by the empty hopes
As I tumble down, falling fast to the ground

I know I'll wither, so peel away the bark
'Cause nothing grows when it is dark
In spite of all my fears, I can see it all so clear
I see it all so clear

Woah
Cover your crystal eyes
And feel the tones that tremble down your spine
Woah
Cover your crystal eyes
And let your colors bleed and blend with mine

Making waves in pitch black sand
Feel the salt dance on my hands
Raw and charcoal colored thighs
Feel so cold and my skin feels so paper-thin

I know I'll wither, so peel away the bark
'Cause nothing grows when it is dark
In spite of all my fears, I can see it all so clear
I see it all so clear

Woah
Cover your crystal eyes
And feel the tones that tremble down your spine
Woah
Cover your crystal eyes
And let your colors bleed and blend with mine

But I'm okay in see-through skin
I forgive what is within
'Cause I'm in this house
I'm in this home
All my time

Woah
Cover your crystal eyes
And feel the tones that tremble down your spine
Woah

Cover your crystal eyes
And let your colors bleed and blend with mine

Overall Meaning

The lyric "Lost in skies of powdered gold" describes someone who feels lost in an idealized, dream-like world, where everything is perfect and unattainable, like powdered gold. They feel trapped in clouds of silver ropes which restrain them from achieving their goals. They've been bombarded with empty hopes and false promises, and now they're falling rapidly towards the ground, losing their grip on reality as they tumble down.

Despite all their fears, they have a moment of clarity as they watch themselves plummet. They see that they need to strip away the layers that cover them, the bark that hides their true selves, to let the light in. The line "nothing grows when it is dark" suggests that they need to open up and face their fears if they want to grow and become better.

The chorus encourages the listener to let go of their fears and to see things as they really are. By covering their crystal eyes, they can feel the music that resonates within them, allowing their colors to bleed and blend with others. This suggests that we all have our own unique colors and emotions, and by sharing them, we can connect with others on a deeper level.

Overall, the song is about finding clarity in a confusing and overwhelming world, letting go of our fears and embracing our true selves.

I feel the same way. traveling down this road we call "life" alone.
In over 47 years, I have not managed to really connect with anyone.
No one really knows me or cares. All people I know are merely acquaintances.
I know in my heart of hearts, I'll die alone and I made peace with that a long time ago. I travel in the dark searching for light.

I keep looking tho, for a friend, a lover, a soulmate I know I'll never find.
Beautiful songs like these speak to me deeply... I can understand them.
For a moment I feel "not alone", but its a fleeting feeling, because I ultimately
have no one to share this moment with.

Nights are lonely, with no one to talk to. Be well. There are others who travel the night alone... Maybe the dawn will come, but not for me.
