Lakehouse
Of Monsters and Men Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, I miss the comfort of this house
Where we are where we are
Where we are where we are
The floor under our feet whispers out
Come on in come on in
Where it all begins

Can you chase the fire away?
Can you chase the fire away?

We climbed up to the top in worn out shoes
But she ran down, she ran down
She ran down to the house
A fox that gains our trust
But then breaks it as he walks
Away from us, away from us

Can you chase the fire away?
Can you chase the fire away?

in the fall, we sleep all day
in the fall, we sleep all day

(Where we are, where we are)
We sleep all day (where we are, where we are)
(Where we are, where we are)
We sleep all day (where we are, where we are)
(Where we are, where we are)
We sleep all day (where we are, where we are)

Can you chase the fire away?
Can you chase the fire away?

In the fall, we sleep all day
In the fall, we sleep all day

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Of Monsters and Men's song Lakehouse evoke a sense of nostalgia and longing for a sense of comfort and belonging. The first stanza sets the mood, expressing the singer's yearning for the familiar comfort of a particular house, where they are located in that very moment. The floor of the house symbolizes a welcoming embrace, and the invitation to come in suggests a strong connection between the singer and this house, highlighting the warmth and security that is found inside.

The second stanza introduces a fox that the singer's party once trusted, but who ultimately betrayed them by departing. The fox can represent deceit or unreliable companionship, a reminder of how things we trust and depend on can easily slip away. The chorus repeats the question "can you chase the fire away?" implying a desire to put out a figurative flame, to escape from something negative, to tame the unpredictable or to seek calmness. The final lines emphasize the idea of escaping, as the singer reveals that they "sleep all day in the fall," possibly signifying escapism or an attempt to hide from the world.

All in all, "Lakehouse" captures the bittersweet feeling of nostalgia and the search for comfort, while acknowledging the inevitable betrayals and heartbreaks that come with trying to hold onto that feeling.

Well, sure, but in the case of this vid, it'd be a pretty intense horror series, wouldnt it?

Was the poor, horrible, unfortunate mutant creature subdued and tortured, as houses/villages were drilled out and built into its living skull?

Or are some group of people trying to survive, as some Eldritch Abomination, perhaps some hideous compatriot of Cthulhu, infests and consumes their homes?

Any way you look at it (or any way I look at it anyway) this particular video displays a universe of horror lol.

Love everything OMAM does though.

@OMaMaRMY

Ive been having LITTLE TALKS with myself BENEATH MY BED, waiting over SIX WEEKS for this song that I LOVE LOVE LOVE. This video deserves to be seen by well over a THOUSAND EYES... This is one of those songs you can feel deep in YOUR BONES. Weather it's a hike up BLUEBERRY MOUNTAIN, or a visit to your BACKYARD, this song will embed itself into your ORGANS, your heart, brain etc... This is my WINTER SOUND, my MOUNTAIN SOUND, my EMPIRE. This is my YELLOW LIGHT in an ocean of BLACK WATER, because I am only HUMAN, WE all SINK I am a SINKING MAN. It's a SLOW LIFE, and I move SLOW AND STEADY

a PHANTOM follows me as I stare at the SKELETONS covered with ice CRYSTALS near my LAKEHOUSE. I blaze my illegal NUMB BEARS to try and escape the pain as I enter a deep deep SLOOM. I want to be in HAWAII, I want to have this HAPPY SONG with me. I feel this HUNGER, like WOLVES WITHOUT TEETH do. Their DIRTY PAWS follow their KING AND LIONHEART, searching for the I OF THE STORM.

I picture SILHOUETTES of A BOY AND A BIRD, floating on PARTICLES. The boy, JOSIE, is playing with SUGAR IN A BOWL, sadly singing "WERE GETTING OLDER"

This is the power of this song...
