The band consists of Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir (vocals, guitar), Ragnar Þórhallsson (vocals, guitar), Brynjar Leifsson (guitar), Kristján Páll Kristjánsson (bass), Arnar Rósenkranz Hilmarsson (drums) and the former member Árni Guðjónsson (keyboards, accordion), who left the band in 2012. The band released their debut album "My Head Is an Animal" in September 2011. The album's single "Little Talks" peaked at #1 in Iceland, and became successful in the United States after extensive airplay on Philadelphia rock station WRFF and subsequent word of mouth. In April 2012 the tune became their first entry on the US singles chart, when it entered the Billboard Hot 100 at #92.

They released further albums, Beneath The Skin in 2015 and Fever Dream in 2019.

In 2015, I was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Failure. Both of my kidneys failed so bad, they're practically useless. I was alone in New Zealand (I'm a Malaysian, went to Auckland for my bachelor's), no one was by my side when the doctor told me abt the bad news. I listened to this song on repeat every night before bed, and cried myself to sleep everytime. No one would ever love me when I'm this way, I thought. My body's broken and so was my spirit. My father flew to Auckland from home to be with me. The first thing he did when he saw me was he hugged me so tightly and said "Don't worry, I promise you I'll take care of you. You will never have to be alone anymore". And he's still here with me, through every tear, every surgery and every dialysis.
I thought I needed a man to take care of me. I forgot I have my Dad.

A friend once said to me "You can't find love if you can't love yourself". The worst part of being aromantic is when you just don’t love someone back, not because you don’t want to, but because you just don’t feel what they feel, but even so you see everyone being so deeply affected by the rejection while you just feel nothing, no void no missing part no hole in your heart that needs healing, just nothing but seeing everyone react so differently makes you feel like the outsider that you are, they understand how the rejected one feels and why they are so hurt, but you just aren’t able to grasp why they feel that way and start questioning what it is you’re missing out on, if it is worth it to try and grasp this weird feeling you can’t reach yet you hesitate after seeing how hurt someone can get through it, but then you still try to taste this forbidden fruit, and you never reach it, you never taste the flesh, you never feel it in your palms, you never even find it in the first place. The song itself is kinda heartbreaking, but to me it also has to do with the fact that it reminds me of the person who introduced me to this band and the time immediately afterwards, when she and I started drifting apart. If you pay attention to the lyrics, with maybe 1 or 2 exceptions, even the upbeat, jolly sounding tracks have melancholic lyrics. i've always translated this song as being sung from the perspective of a girl heartbroken over her love for a boy - feeling like she was never able to do it right, the way she feels like her love deserves. she feels unworthy, feels like he is one of the most important people to her, yet, cannot love him because there are so many others out there better for him. i thnk the minotaur is the girl, and the serpent is the boy - and there are plenty more fish in the sea, plenty more others who would better fit the beautiful serpent than a (wonderfully magical) land animal such as herself, and she feels like she is from a completely other world - one in which she will continue travelling throughout on her boat, constantly on the move, never settling for someone who just wants to simply swim along with her on her journey.

I can relate tbh, I found out that I'm lithromantic and this lead to my long term, long distance relationship to collapse. He wrote a story based on the entirety of the album it’s from (My Head Is an Animal) about a girl who has a meltdown relating to being pressured into telling her friends about her crush, which she can’t, because she’s aromantic, and she uses the album as solace.

Anyway, this song is really beautiful. I like that it can just be seen in a whole variety of love-related contexts.

Hearing this song gave me a weird sense of like nostalgia or deja vu, but I don’t think I’ve heard it before. It made me cry, and it’s hard to describe songs that give me such a weird sense of comfort and freedom in myself, and bring peace to my chaotic mind. It’s so rare to find something this beautiful

I love this song, it makes me sad but happy. When I need to smile, I listen to this. If I need to cry, I listen to this. This song is wonderful and can be for any emotion or event. When I get married I hope to hear this song, when my funeral comes around, I hope this song plays. It's helped me through many hard times and even gave me the courage to ask my current partner to go out with me. This song has helped me more than some people could, and I'm so happy it has helped me in the ways it has.

I remember hearing this song years ago, loving the melancholic melody. Having had feelings for someone who did not feel the same back, took me to depths I could never fathom and everytime I heard this song it was bittersweet. Now I hear it to remind myself of just how strong I was when I discovered it.
