Wild Roses
Of Monsters and Men Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wild roses on a bed of leaves in the month of May
I think I wrote my own pain
Oh, don't you?

Down by the creek, I couldn't sleep so I followed a feeling
Sounds like the vines, they are breathing
(Oh it sounds like, it sounds like, it sounds like, it sounds, oh)
And I've seen the way the seasons change when I just give it time
But I feel out of my mind all the time
In the night I'm wild eyed, and you got me now

Oh roses, they don't mean a thing you don't understand
But why don't we full on pretend?
Oh, won't you?
Before I closed my eyes I saw a moth in the sky
And I wish I could fly that high
Oh, don't you?

A serpent on a bed of leaves in the month of May
What do you want me to say?
(Oh it sounds like, it sounds like, it sounds like, it sounds, oh)
You keep me still when all I feel is an endless direction
When I think I'm losing connection
I see you

In the night I'm wild eyed, and you got me now
Dim the lights, we're wild eyed, and you got me now

Oh roses, they don't mean a thing you don't understand
But why don't we full on pretend?
Oh, won't you?
Before I closed my eyes I saw a moth in the sky
And I wish I could fly that high
Oh, don't you?
Oh, don't you?
Oh, don't you?

In the night, we're wild eyed, and you got me now
Dim the lights, we're wild eyed, and you got me now

In the night, I'm wild eyed, and you got me now

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Wild Roses" by Of Monsters and Men depict a scene of a person surrounded by nature and feeling overwhelmed by their emotions. The image of wild roses on a bed of leaves in the month of May sets the tone for the song, which is both beautiful and melancholy. The singer acknowledges that they have written their own pain, and wonders if the person listening to them understands that. The references to the creek and the vines breathing create a sense of being in the midst of something, something that is both alive and possibly dangerous.

The chorus, with the repeated line "Oh, roses, they don't mean a thing you don't understand," suggests a desire to connect with someone who understands or can relate to the singer's tumultuous feelings. The moth in the sky also symbolizes the desire to escape or transcend the heaviness of the situation. The serpent on a bed of leaves in the month of May could be interpreted as a symbol of rebirth or renewal, but the singer is unsure of what to say or how to feel.

Overall, the lyrics of "Wild Roses" express a sense of uncertainty and vulnerability, while also acknowledging the beauty and complexity of the natural world.

One of my favourite songs off of the Album.

It makes me feel a small kind of hope for personal freedom. I feel so trapped in my own life sometimes, I always find myself looking up into the sky and wishing I could just find my own place, away from the system, away from the endless crowds that I never fit in with. To just live in a small home of my own making by an isolated beach with someone I love and finally find peace.

I get a serene feeling when listening to this, hopefully one day I can find the peace I’m searching for in my life and be free of the fakeness, the drama, the chaos, the loneliness, the numbness, the feeling of not belonging anywhere and wondering why I’m even trying to maintain a life I’m not happy with.

At the end of the day, our own freedom and personal happiness is what’s most important. No matter what kind of life you end up living or who with or where you are. Money, status, materialism, it’s all worthless and meaningless in the face of just finding peace and feeling happy.

This song’s beautiful and grants introspection, thank you Of Monsters and Men.

Why I like Of Monsters and Men
The girl sings lead, it's a hit.
The guy sings lead, it's a hit.
They both sing, it's a hit.
It's like having 3 bands in one.
