This song makes me think of two people who in love but in the wrong time in history. There is a nuclear war going on around the world and they are trying to escape the city so they don't die:

"Im looking for a place to start" --- the girl is looking/thinking of a new home, since her home is being destroyed by bombs and warfare.

"and everything feels so different now" --- since bombs are reducing the city to rubble, everything looks so different now

"Just grab a hold of my hand, i will lead you through this wonderland" --- the man is asking her to grab his hand so he can help lead her out of the city through all the rubble and mess, but is trying to keep her hopes and spirits high which is why he says wonderland.

"water up to my knees" --- water is flooding the city from all the broken water pipes and seawalls/lake dams

"but sharks are swimming in the sea" --- a metaphor for how she is thinking that other animals/people are happily living there lives somewhere else where it is safe (i.e. sharks are safely living in the sea water, not the water that she is dangerously treading through while running for her life)

"just follow my yellow light" --- it is night time and the yellow light is his flashlight. He is telling her to follow him and his flashlight so they can find a way out.

"and ignore all those big warning signs" --- telling her to ignore all the city sirens that are alarming for an air raid

"somewhere deep in the dark, a howling beast hears us talk" --- God (or whoever they believe in) is listening and watching over them as they attempt to flee

"i dare you to close your eyes, and see all the colors in disguise" --- the man is telling the woman to close her eyes and try to picture something else besides what is actually going on

"running into the night, the earth is shaking and i see a light" --- while they are running into the night, the earth is shaking because of the hundreds of bombs that are being dropped on the city. She sees a very bright light fall from the sky, and that light is a nuclear explosion

"the light is blinding my eyes" --- nuclear bombs are extremely bright when they explode, so he is blinded by the massive explosion.

"as the soft walls, eat us alive" --- the soft walls are referring to the shockwave of the explosion and the walls of dust and debris that are speeding towards them and devour them

As for 3 minutes of music after the lyrics are over, i picture them standing there after seeing the bright light as the shockwave and wall of dust and debris speed towards them, all in slow motion. As the music gradually grows greater and louder, the wall of dust and debris gets closer and closer. As soon as the music quiets down, the wall has hit them and "ate them alive"

So yeah, that's what i think whenever i hear it. :( great song.

I remember listening to this song 8 years ago in the car with my girlfriend at the time. It was a rainy night and we were on the way home after eating out. We were fighting at the time and there was a question of where our relationship was headed. After trying to talk it out, we sat in silence for a while, then this song started playing. I instinctively grabbed her hand and held it as she rested her other hand on top of mine. In that moment, without saying a word, as the "lala's" in the song crescendoed to its climax, it felt like everything would be okay between us. We're not together anymore, but for some reason I'm always reminded of that night and that seemingly small, insignificant event whenever I listen to this song, even 8 years later. I guess it just reminds me of a simpler time.

I always imagine like a girl who have severe anxiety/Depression and is afraid of everything and everyone. So she met a boy who's willing to help her. That's why even if she describes everything as they are scary and dangerous, he is always calm and confident. He tries to make her confident of herself too, as he says 'ignore those big warning signs' refering to her afraid to go with him. Also, she seems to be lost because she just can't find herself on so many anxiety and so many scary feelings. I think it is more about what they want to transmit. I mean, about the feelings and their power, idk. I think the "sea" is a form to represent it. The nature in general is impredecible, like humans emotions. The sea can be calm, and beautiful, but it can be rude and fear, too. I feel they wanted to explore the emotions in some of their songs... When i was younger i was definitely at risk and no matter what I did the adults in my life (family and teachers) either didn't care or never noticed. I found this song one night and it made me cry immediately. It became a nightly routine to cry myself to sleep while listening to this because at the time for me the first person symbolized someone on the edge of ending it all and the other was her conscience that was accepting of it and helped her to do it. It helped me to hear for some reason and made me feel less alone. Now that i'm doing a little better i think my stance on the meaning of the song has changed. It feels more like her conscience is helping her through a hard time and letting her know its okay to feel these things. I still cry whenever i listen to this song but its more because i wish i could go back and help my younger self through those horrible years.

my theory for this song is perhaps the two are in a toxic relationship the girl is insecure and lost in adulthood and the man is trying to fix her they both love each other but he doesn't love her how she needs to be loved indicated by "ignore those big warning signs" and "just follow my yellow light" i think the lights signify her being "fixed" but that's not what she needs but she follows his ideas and it doesn't work out it just damages both of them and their relationship falls apart indicated by "the light is blinding my eyes" and "the walls eat us alive" lines.

This song associates me with growing up. A girl is young, fool and naive, might just laeve her parents - "and everything feels so different now". She had met a boy (maybe she fell in love with him or they just became friends) and he involved her in sth illigal - "sharks"(let it be selling dru*s). He could not know about all danger or was sure it would pass - "ignore all this warning sines". The yellow light is his hope for better future, I guess. Than the police find out their dids - "monster hear us talk", so they were forsed to run - "running into the night...". He was trying to appeace her - " just close your eyes". She saw a rad and blue lights of police cars and he was blinded by a headlights. What about soft walls, they can be a dept to main dru* sellers. But I prefere the wersion that it is walls of prison.

Anyway, everybody inteprets this song on his/her own way, as I see. And I think it's beatifull that everybody can find here something for him/herself. Like this song♥

Many of their songs ask existential questions about life, love, conflict, and finding meaning. There seems to be lots of pain while chasing after a glimmer of hope and escape. I think there music is reflective of a generation that has had terror thrust upon them by a world going madder every day. I've had trouble interpreting this song for years. I used to think that the male speaker was intentionally leading the female speaker into harm's way, since he said to ignore all the warning signs and the light was blinding his eyes, (which could still be true, I guess.) But the last line and the air of the music afterward suggests that he's leading her out of her terribly tiny comfort zone in order to truly enjoy life, though scary it may be. The soft walls are the small confines of what she considers "safety", confines so small that they "eat them alive," or basically have them rotting away.
You know it's a really good song when it takes someone forever to figure it out and it's still abiguous lol

Their lyrics are as much poetry as they are part of the track. Most bands have lyrics that are loosely telling a story but are more or less just giving the vocals tone. Playing the right notes if you will.

That's not to down on that concept though. Both are fine, but OMAM are special because of their poetry.

This is fucken awesome. This is fuckin talent. Why? Because it shows what we have not really seen or heard of before. There is a beauty of symbolism in their work and its difficult to see, which is a good thing. I hear today's artist's and I enjoy only one or two songs from those. yet, these guys I have enjoyed all of their songs. There is a reason why I keep hitting reply to their music.
