Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Ofelia K has seen a few of her collaborative tracks gain indie cred over the past three years, but she's just recently coming to light with her solo music, and critics are taking note.
Ofelia K has performed as vocalist of the indie-pop duo Wanderhouse and collaborated on the 2013 EDM track "New Scene" from producer Felix Cartal, which Billboard called "one of the best dance recordings of the year." It is only since June that she has been releasing music under her solo moniker, though she's still working with her Wanderhouse other-half, Andy Rosen (aka Doctor Rosen Rosen).
Bloggers are currently talking about Ofelia K's most recent single, "Gone," which she released last week and is one in a string of heartfelt pop tracks showcasing her delicate voice over clever complementary production.
Kick Kick Snare calls the track "a breathy, emotive masterpiece. Detuned pianos, gorgeous reverberations, and a stark intimacy build into a work that's both fragile and poignant." "From the start you can feel all the pain that Ofelia delivers in her gentle vocals as they flutter above the piano accompaniment. ... Ofelia K definitely knows how to make us cry, but in in all of the best ways possible," writes Oblivious Pop.
Ofelia K's debut single, "White T-Shirt," is available from Nashville label South by Sea Music and can be found on iTunes along with her most recent track, "Gone," plus a remix of "White T-Shirt" by Golden Coast and her second single, "As a Bell." You can also listen to all four via SoundCloud. Her 2013 recording with Felix Cartel can be found on YouTube.

Everything cuts like a sharp knife
Is it the sign of a weak mind
Knowing you're paying a high price
But it's not always as it seems
If you hide it on the shelf
Can it be invisible
Put your pain on someone else
Live to regret
Never forget
How much is it worth
To win the unwinnable
Take a good look at yourself
Before you call me criminal
You gotta unleash your potential
There's so many shades of the real world
Need to believe what you can't line
But don't be to smart you will get blind
What if all is just a dream
If you hide it on the shelf
Can it be invisible
Put your pain on someone else
Is that only cynical
Live to regret
Never forget
How much is it worth
To win the unwinnable
Take a good look at yourself
Before you call me criminal
Oh oh oh oh
But it's not always as it seems
If you hide it on the shelf
Can it be invisible
Put your pain on someone else
Is that only cynical
Live to regret
Never forget
How much is it worth
To win the unwinnable
Take a good look at yourself
If you hide it on the shelf
Can it be invisible
Put your pain on someone else
Is that only cynical
Live to regret
Never forget
How much is it worth
To win the unwinnable
Take a good look at yourself
Before you call criminal
The lyrics of Ofelia's song Criminal is about self-reflection and questioning one's own actions before passing judgement on others. The opening lines indicate that the person being referred to is causing a lot of controversy and is constantly making headlines. The lines "Is it the sign of a weak mind, Knowing you're paying a high price" suggest that the person may be aware of their mistakes but is unable to control their impulses.
The chorus emphasizes the need for self-examination and introspection. The lyrics suggest that everyone has the potential to do good or bad, and one should not be quick to judge without examining their own actions. The line "Take a good look at yourself before you call me criminal" emphasizes this point.
The bridge poses a hypothetical question about the nature of reality and questions whether what we see is real or not. It also emphasizes the need for self-awareness and recognition of one's own faults.
Overall, Ofelia's song Criminal encourages self-reflection and self-awareness before passing judgement on others. It suggests that everyone has the potential to make mistakes and one should examine their own actions before criticizing others.
