I Love My Car
Ofln - Belle & Sebastian Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'll admit today I've gone too far
To enamor myself of my little motor car
I love my dog
I love my pussy cat, I love the rat
That lives under the floor and makes his bed from novelettes
The day will come soon when I look in your eyes but
I won't see you
I've got a head like a soaking sponge
I've got a tongue like a little slug
I won't be bugged by trivia
I love my Carl
I love my Brian my Dennis and my Al
I could even find it in my head to love Mike Love
I wish I could say the same for you
The day will come soon when I look in your eyes to
see you smiling
The lyrics of "I Love My Car" by Belle & Sebastian capture a sense of detachment and emotional disconnection experienced by the singer in the song. The opening lines express a strong affection towards the singer's car, indicating an excessive attachment to material possessions. The repetition of "I love my car" emphasizes the intensity of this bond and suggests a prioritization of the car over other aspects of life.
The subsequent verses introduce a list of other beloved creatures in the singer's life, including their dog, cat, and even a rat. This eclectic mix of companions conveys a sense of whimsy and eccentricity, highlighting the singer's capacity for unconventional affection and empathy towards creatures big and small. However, the contrast drawn between the singer's love for their pets and their lack of similar feelings towards a human counterpart sets up a poignant juxtaposition.
The lyrics then take a darker turn as the singer expresses a wish for emotional reciprocity, lamenting the absence of mutual love in a relationship. The anticipation of a future moment when the singer will look into the eyes of the other person but not find them there suggests a feeling of isolation and impending heartbreak. This introspective moment delves into themes of unrequited love and emotional disconnect, adding depth to the seemingly lighthearted verses preceding it.
The concluding verses return to a lighthearted tone with references to various individuals that the singer professes love for, including Carl, Brian, Dennis, Al, and even Mike Love. These names may allude to personal connections or cultural references that hold significance for the singer. Despite this professed capacity for love towards others, the singer's unresolved feelings towards a specific person remain palpable, creating a sense of melancholy amid the song's whimsical charm. The final sentiment of longing for a reciprocal smile in the eyes of the other person encapsulates a yearning for emotional connection amidst a backdrop of detached affections.

reminds me of an old song that I simply can't recall what song it is ... its such a lovely melody ..
Off hand I can think of a few songs which sound similar :
1) Daffodil Lament by The Cranberries - (listen to the second half of this Cranberries song)
2) The Piano Man by Billy Joel
3) American Pie by Madonna (strangely more Madonna's version than Don McClean's original version)
But I think there's another folksy pop song that probably sound even more alike with this melody ...
Can anyone help ?

The trumpet. That's the exact reason why I felt in love with this band. All their songs with the trumpet are amazing.

I'm here to listen after reading a comment on a video of Brian Wilson talking about how he didn't like Mike Love, in the comment he quoted the Beach Boys line in this song so I had to come give it a listen and I enjoyed it!

In all the years I have loved this song I never even HEARD the mention of The Beach Boys! I'm sure it's because of the fun, uplifting melody, but oh wow! I love my Carl too...and all the boys. And good on them for making a little dig at Mike Love. I knew there was a reason I was so enamoured with Belle & Sebastian! :)
