She moved with her family to Toronto in 1971. Playing cello since the age of six Harnoy made her professional debut as a soloist with an orchestra at age ten. Her 1982 debut at Carnegie Hall brought her international public acclaim.

She was made a member of the Order of Canada in 1995.
