With her opera singer for a mother, theater organist father and Björk’s Homogenic on constant rotation, Oh Land was enraptured by the combination of experimental and classical arts. “My goal is to sound like I’m from 2050, but still feel really classic, like the music is an old friend,” said Oh Land. She spent her days pirouetting as a ballet dancer at the Danish Royal Ballet Academy when an injury forced her to reinvent herself and discover her true talent and passion as a musician. Oh Land was discovered by Kasper Bjørke who soon released her first album, Fauna, which garnered critical acclaim in her homeland of Denmark. Her soundscapes are lavish, crunchy, symphonic, brute and captivated with rhythms that fly apart. She translates the sounds live via her contraption - a homemade one-woman-band music box topped with balloon video projections (seeing is believing). Her music is for movement and new songs such as the thumping Sun of a Gun and euphoric White Nights have proven to make even the most portentous get up and dance. Having been discovered by Epic Records at 2009’s SXSW, she is currently putting the finishing touches on her US debut album and an EP to be released this fall.

Little Things
Oh Land Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To distract from what
We're all wondering
What will be there to protect us?
We're sorry, we are closed, rushing
Paperbacks are torn, traffic
Red lights blinking
And my lips are closing now, kiss me
Eyes that shut me out
Embracing day after day, working it out
Caught up in the little things
To distract from what
We're all wondering, wondering, wondering
Why are we here in the first place
Tiny little cars down there
It's a long fall
We're all wondering, wondering, wondering
What will be there to protect us
It's the little things
It's the little things
It's the little things
It's the little things
And I scream against the wind, hear me
Will you leave it in my hands, count me in
Story is mine, live it
I'll jump for your life
Imma 2 steps from the stairs up to my baby
Gonna toss out all the doubt
'Cause I am ready
I'm a little late, ???cause lately I've been aching
And I know that I've been all around
But you've got me all now
Caught up in the little things
To distract from what
We're all wondering, wondering, wondering
Why are we here in the first place
Tiny little cars down there
It's a long fall
We're all wondering, wondering, wondering
What will be there to protect us
Caught up in the little things
I didn't sleep much! And did I do enough?
To distract from what
Will a hurricane sweep us? Into the dark blue cloud above
We are all wondering, wondering, wondering
And am I able to be a wife and a friend and a rebel
Why are we here in the first place
Settle down and live in a fable. Peter Pan lost at the pool table
Tiny little cars down there
Am I looking for trouble? Seeing stars in the Hubble?
It's a long fall
We are all wondering, wondering, wondering
I'm forever so blind in this puzzle
What will be there to protect us
It's the little things, little things, little things
"Oh Land's" song "Little Things" explores the idea of being caught up in the small details of life that often distract us from what we are truly wondering about. The opening lines, "Caught in the little things, To distract from what we're all wondering, What will be there to protect us?" highlight this theme of distraction. The lyrics continue on to describe a hectic, chaotic world full of closed stores, torn paperbacks, and rushing traffic.
The chorus repeats the idea that we are all wondering why we are here in the first place, while tiny cars down below represent the fragility of life. The little things in life are both a distraction and a reminder of how quickly things can change and how little control we may have over our own fate. The song also touches on the idea of having a purpose or a story to live, and the fear of not being able to fulfill all of the roles expected of us in life, such as being a wife, a friend, and a rebel.
Overall, "Little Things" is a contemplative song that encourages listeners to reflect on their own lives and the things that they may be distracted by. It reminds us that life is fragile and unpredictable, and that we should all strive to find purpose and meaning in our lives.
