Lonely Star
Oh Wonder Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Literally at this second
Like in everything that's happening in the world
Being a human is pretty much the hardest thing to be

Backseat, sat at the local bar
Dressed to the nines to impress the dark
Damn, they sure look good together
I'm just hoping for good weather
Lost it all when I heard the sound
Windows down and the power's out
Damn, they sure look good together
I'm just struck down in bad weather

I'm a lonely star
Is there anybody out there?
I'm a lonely star
Is there anybody out there?
I'm a lonely star
Is there anybody out there?
I'm a lonely star
Is there anybody out there?
(Is there anybody?)

Words are there but they don't come out
Not my best at singin' loud
Damn, I sure can't make it better
I'm just hoping for bad weather
I guess I'll be a somebody that nobody knows
Guess I'll never find the one that I can call home
Home, home

I'm a lonely star
Is there anybody out there?
I'm a lonely star
Is there anybody out there?
I'm a lonely star
Is there anybody out there?
I'm a lonely star
Is there anybody out there?
(Is there anybody?)

I'm a lonely star
Is there anybody out there?
I'm a lonely star
Is there anybody out there?
I'm a lonely star
Is there anybody out there?
I'm a lonely star

Is there anybody out there?
Is there anybody out there?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Oh Wonder's Lonely Star are straightforward; they speak of loneliness, isolation, and the struggle to find one's place in the world. The song begins with a line about the difficulties of being human, which sets the tone for the rest of the song. The first verse describes the singer sitting alone at a bar, watching two people together, realizing that they look good together. This connection emphasizes their loneliness and makes the singer's isolation more apparent. In the following verse, the singer expresses difficulty in expressing themselves, "words are there, but they don't come out." They feel helpless in this situation and are hoping for some kind of distraction, bad weather for example. The chorus repeats the phrase, "I'm a lonely star, is there anybody out there?," portraying the feelings of isolation and desperation.

Loneliness is a universal human experience that is highly relatable. The song reflects the basic need for human connection and the struggle to find it. It's a song about that disoriented and helpless feeling when you realize everyone around you has someone or somewhere to go. This song perfectly captures the feeling of being left behind or forgotten about. The lyrics paint a picture of a lonely person unsure if they'll ever be seen or heard. The song is an emotional and highly relatable reflection of our current times, especially with the ongoing pandemic and social distancing rules.

for me, this song is about us. as individuals. the listener. how we look outwards to see people surrounded by so many others, quite literally "stars" (celebrities, singers, famous ppl, youtubers etc) but then looking inward and finding nothing.
or perhaps finding /something/, but no one to share it with.

"damn, they sure do look good together.
im just stuck down in bad weather,"

the person looks at 'them' , perhaps oh wonder themselves, happy with their lives. in love, beautiful and bright. but theyre the rain on their own parade when they realize how they dont have anyone like that with them, how they could never even think to have what actual stars possess (signified by the bleak hopelessness of bad weather.)

"guess i'll be somebody that no one knows
guess i'll never find the one that i can call home, home,"

they are someone, but theres /no one there/ to see. callback to the lyric earlier in the song when they are "dressed to the nines but in the dark"- thats it. they are a lone star in the dark vastnessof space. no one there to witness their shine.
we want someone we can call home. how many times have we sung love songs when in reality we really dont have anyone that we can love as deeply as that? at least, we havent met them yet. we frequently tell ourselves "they're coming" but they havent, you've been waiting for a while now, never meeting your "home". or maybe never getting that opportunity. never finding those you can really click with.

"words are there but they dont come out
not the best at singing loud,"

we are, individually, so very talented. we are unique- after all- we're all stars. but the 'lone star' doesnt have an outlet. no audience. no one to encourage those stucked words and unsung notes.
this could be portraying how, while anyone can be a star, they wont always shine as bright as the others. lets say for example a platform like youtube- your voice just wont be heard as much as youd like at first thanks to the rigid capitalist system thats taking place. its hard to get noticed, when there are countless clusters of stars shining bright next to eachother and youre just /there/, alone, surrounded by inky black nothingness.

"im a lonely star.
is there anybody out there?"

the person of this song calls out over and over and over again, hoping their voice reaches someone. does it ever?

personally, yes. it does. this song is a very testament to that. the fact that so many people can listen to this and perhaps resonate with it means that all the lone star's message has reached the others. youre heard. we know youre out there. the one reading this, if youre a lone star, then this song is, finally, finally reaching out to you. you arent alone anymore. we share your feelings.

This song is the only one I could relate to.

“Backseat sat at the local bar”
I always sit alone or just distant from everyone else.
“Dressed to the nines to impress the dark”
I try my best to impress everyone, but nobody is impressed.
“Damn, they sure look good together”
I feel like everyone is getting older now and getting into relationships or close..
“I’m just looking for good weather”
I want to stop crying, but I just can’t.
“Lost it all when I heard the sound”
Whenever I hear this song, I just can’t stop myself but feel sad.
“Windows down and the power’s out”
I always cry at nighttime so nobody could hear me.
“Damn, they sure look good together”
“I’m just struck down in bad weather”
I can’t control myself and cry just over a stupid thought.
“I’m a lonely star”
I have nobody by my side..
“Is there anybody out there?”
I still have a bit of hope to find someone who will always be there for me.

Not going to lie . . . . until I read this comment, I thought this was from their first album 😂 (I think the reason is that I usually listen to this in a music app and the icon/thumbnail (?) is white color like the first album one is, so my brain just lumped them together due to the similar sounds as well 😅 I've been listening to them from their debut, but I am just horrible at remembering song/album names lol) Anyway, from this album, this song, Oceansize, Keep on Dancing, and I Like It When You Love Me give me first album vibes!

RecalcitrantRaccoon

Totally agree, I haven't really loved their last two albums but their first one is absolutely incredible. This song and Keep on Dancing are a return to form and I'm SO here for it!

It’s really interesting to think about how if this whole situation never happened, this song wouldn’t have been made. It shows that good things can come out of difficult times, and that we can choose to make the best of our situation, thank you Oh Wonder for spreading your passion and emotion with the world in this difficult time. We appreciate it ❤️
