This Christmas
Oh Wonder Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And a quiet hum sing winter melodies
Seems funny how this season brings a tear
And I'm longing for the snow to disappear
Hey now
If I close my eyes now
Shut all the world out
I'd give all the snow and sleigh bells, all the Christmas lights
I'd give all the cold and mistletoe, all the cozy nights
I'd give all the love this time of year, all that festive cheer
I'd give anything this Christmas, anything this Christmas
I'd give anything this Christmas to have you here
There's a taxi driving someone home tonight
And a Christmas card that I will never write
Wish I had that river I could skate away on
Wish I had you in my arms, where you belong
Hey now
If I close my eyes now
Shut all the world out
Just you and me
I'd give all the snow and sleigh bells, all the Christmas lights
I'd give all the cold and mistletoe, all the cozy nights
I'd give all the love this time of year, all that festive cheer
I'd give anything this Christmas, anything this Christmas
I'd give anything this Christmas to have you here
I'd give anything this Christmas, anything this Christmas
I'd give anything this Christmas
All the snow and sleigh bells, all the Christmas lights
I'd give all the cold and mistletoe, all the cozy nights
I'd give all the love this time of year, all that festive cheer
I'd give anything this Christmas, anything this Christmas
I'd give anything this Christmas to have you here
The song "This Christmas" by Oh Wonder is a poignant reflection on the holiday season and the feelings of longing that can accompany it. The first verse describes the cheerful atmosphere of the streets during the holiday season, with "a million faces smiling" and "winter melodies" ringing out. However, despite the festivities, the singer is "longing for the snow to disappear" - a sentiment that hints at a deeper sense of melancholy.
The chorus is a heartfelt expression of the singer's desire to be with a loved one during the holidays. The lyrics describe the many things they would be willing to give up - the snow, the sleigh bells, the cozy nights - in order to have their loved one present with them. The repetition of the phrase "I'd give anything this Christmas" emphasizes the intensity of the singer's longing.
The second verse takes a more somber turn, with the mention of a taxi driver taking someone home and a Christmas card that was never sent. The singer once again expresses their wish to be with their loved one, using imagery of a frozen river they could skate away on if they were together. The chorus is repeated once more, bringing the song to a bittersweet close.
Overall, "This Christmas" is a touching and relatable song that captures the mix of joy and sadness that can come with the holiday season. The lyrics convey a sense of yearning and the desire to be close to those we care about most.

I had a rough thanksgiving too. My family was supposed to come to my house for the one time a year I see them, but instead my grandma was hospitalized and diagnosed with cancer in Florida so my mom had to go to visit her and my thanksgiving was canceled. We went to visit my dads family instead which was nice, but it just wasn’t the same.
