Their name was inspired by a street in Indiana where lead singer Derek Williams grew up. “When my parents divorced, my mother moved my brother and I to Alabama,” says Williams. “We ended up leaving our lives and comforts behind to take a big risk as a family. Fast forward a few years and I felt like I was back in the same situation. Our band, Ohio Avenue, decided to try to play music full time. It was a big risk for us to leave our day jobs and rely on the band for income, but we knew it was the right thing to do.”
Though relatively new to the rock scene, the band has managed to make a powerful impact. Their debut EP was produced by Barry Blair and their single “Close to Me” received airplay across the Southeast. The band just finished a full-length project in late 2009 with producer Adam Smith called “The Sound.” The cd will be releasing on Itunes, Amazon, and other major retailers on February 16, 2010.
Ohio Avenue has landed opening slots for bands like Switchfoot and Needtobreathe. Most recently, the band has been invited to play at music festivals like Enfuego, City Stages, The Big Ticket Festival, and Cornerstone. In addition, Ohio Avenue was a favorite at NACA South 2009, booking over 30 shows at colleges across the Southeast.
As of today, Ohio Avenue is traveling and performing at venues all over the Southeast. They hope that their music will impact the people they meet in a meaningful way.
Liar Liar
Ohio Avenue Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You can't believe the words coming from our mouths
We're innocent until the truth is found out
We're hiding in the daylight
In the air and painted clouds
Until we're found
You're quite the mannequin
Liar, liar, you'll never hide behind
That plastic little smile
We look the other way
And fall in love with the lies that we create
We're oil and water but never separate
We're hiding in the daylight
In the air and painted clouds
Until we're found
The song "Liar Liar" by Ohio Avenue is a powerful portrayal of deception and betrayal. The opening lines "Can you hear the sound of such deception?" set the tone for the song, hinting at the layers of lies and deceit that will be explored in the lyrics. The idea of not being able to believe the words coming from someone's mouth is a universal experience; we have all been lied to at some point in our lives. The line "We're innocent until the truth is found out" speaks to the idea of being judged based on the information available at the time. The line is almost a warning to the liar, as if to say that the truth will eventually come out and judgment will be passed.
In the chorus, the singer refers to the liar's "blank stare" and "plastic little smile," revealing the façade that many people put on when they are being deceitful. The line "We look the other way and fall in love with the lies that we create" speaks to the idea that sometimes we are complicit in our own deception. We believe the lies because they are easier than facing the truth. The final line of the chorus, "We're oil and water but never separate," is a powerful image. It suggests that even though the liar and the deceived might seem incompatible, they are bound together by the lies.
