Pretend
Okay Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We will be able to make it a friend
You've got no holes you're still trying to mend
We've got no rules left to break or to bend
We've got no time left to save or to spend
We've got no future or past left to blend
We've got no impressions we're trying to mend
We've got no reason left to pretend
The lyrics of Okay's song "Pretend" are rife with meaning and emotion. At its core, the song tells of a relationship that has reached its end. The singer acknowledges that they are reaching the end of their time together, but suggests that perhaps they can use this time to become friends. The line "We will be able to make it a friend" suggests that while the romance may be over, there is still a chance for a meaningful connection.
As the song moves forward, it becomes clear that the two people in the relationship have been struggling for some time. The line "You've got no holes you're still trying to mend" suggests that one of them has been trying to fix their problems for a while, but hasn't quite succeeded. Similarly, the line "We've got no rules left to break or to bend" suggests that they have exhausted all of their options and are now at a loss for what to do.
As the song comes to an end, the singer is resigned to the fact that their relationship is over. They have no time or energy left to save it, and no reason to pretend anymore. The line "We've got no reason left to pretend" is especially poignant, as it suggests that they have been faking it for a while, trying to make something work that just isn't meant to be.
Overall, "Pretend" is a moving and powerful song about the end of a relationship. It captures the sadness and frustration that come with realizing that something you once thought was perfect is now irreparably broken.

Baby by now we're so close to the end
We will be able to make it a friend
And we've got no holes you're still trying to mend
And we've got no rules left to break or to bend
When we’ve got no time left to save or to spend
When we've got no future nor past left to blend
And we've got nothing precious you’re trying to defend
Then we've got no reason left to pretend
