The band self-released their first album, Stars Too Small to Use, which led them to the South by Southwest music festival. After recording their first album in a garage, they signed with Jagjaguwar. Okkervil River continued by releasing four more albums, including critically lauded concept album Black Sheep Boy.
After a period of touring for Black Sheep Boy, Okkervil River followed up with The Stage Names. The album sold 10,000 in its opening week in the United States. The group released a free covers album, Golden Opportunities Mixtape from their live performances.
The band has garnered positive critical reception. Especially noted are each song's lyrics, intricate instrumentation, and thematic albums. In addition, they were featured on the talk show Late Night with Conan O'Brien and have performed with high profile bands such as The Decemberists, The New Pornographers, The National, and Lou Reed.
Okkervil River released their most recent album The Silver Gymnasium on September 3, 2013.

Okkervil River Lyrics

Lets kill the morning, let it die
Will your eyes flash out a warning
But they'll be another morning after afternoon and tonight
Fuck long hours sick with singing
Sick with singing the same songs
In the bars, they'll soon be drinking
Lets cash my check and drink along
Old times, hello, hey, I've missed you
Old life, hey now, let me in
Because you win on every issue
Now, can I kiss you?
Don't you care how long it's been?
It has been so many years, I lived my yearning
But in every bed, it led me through
They only bloom on what was burning
And it grew, the fire grew
And now with nothing to consume
It's turned on me in my glass room
Where I'll burn, you think I'm finished
Think I'm not winning
Well, go on, assume
So, take me, I'm yours, morning starship
Sparkling stars line your lights as they lift off the loneliest street corner
This clown has yet leaned against
I'll let all these fine faces fold into me
The warmth from the space lights illumines the sea as the laughingest mouths wetly open,
But we set them sighing
We'll take them flying
And we'll take this man left almost passed out
Cause we're pretty sure he needs a hand
He says he can't stand
And when we pick him up
He asks us where this ship will land
But he knows we know it isn't coming down
He knows we know we'll fly so far
Til finally stars hold him in all around
Til he forgets the ground
Til he forgets the crawling way
Real people sometimes are
The lyrics of Okkervil River's song Bruce Wayne Campbell Interviewed on the Roof of the Chelsea Hotel 1979 are a contemplation on the fleeting nature of life and the inevitability of death. The song begins with the desire to let go of the morning and embrace the present moment. The first stanza talks about the monotony of life, singing the same songs and going through the same motions, and the desire to break free from it by cashing a check and drinking. The second stanza delves into nostalgia, with the singer pining for the past, wanting to relive the moments that have passed. The yearning is mixed with regret for the missed opportunity as well as a hint of resignation.
As the song progresses, the tone becomes more hopeful, guiding the listener towards a realization that the present moment is what truly matters. The third stanza talks about a morning starship that sets off from the loneliest street corner. The ship takes the singer and the listeners on a journey, and the image of sparkling stars lining the lights is metaphorical of the warmth and energy that the ship provides. The ship picks up a man who is almost passed out and takes him along for the ride. The man knows that the ship isn't coming down but he still asks where it will land. The final lines of the song talk about forgetting the ground and the crawling way, symbolizing the freedom that comes with living in the present.

Pull down the shades, lets kill the morning
Let's close the curtains and avoid the day ahead
Lets kill the morning, let it die
Ignore the morning and let it pass us by
Will your eyes flash out a warning
Do you have a message to share with your gaze?
But they'll be another morning after afternoon and tonight
There will always be another day, no need to worry
Fuck long hours sick with singing
I'm tired of performing the same songs
Sick with singing the same songs
It's boring to keep singing the same tunes
In the bars, they'll soon be drinking
People will start drinking in the bars soon
Lets cash my check and drink along
Let's cash my paycheck and drink with everyone else
Old times, hello, hey, I've missed you
I remember the past fondly and miss it
Old life, hey now, let me in
I want to go back to the way things were before
Because you win on every issue
You always come out on top
Now, can I kiss you?
Is it okay if I kiss you now?
Don't you care how long it's been?
Do you not miss the past at all?
It has been so many years, I lived my yearning
It's been too long, and I've longed for the past
But in every bed, it led me through
My desire for the past has guided me through various experiences
They only bloom on what was burning
My experiences have only flourished on what was intense
And it grew, the fire grew
The intensity of my experiences kept growing
And now with nothing to consume
But now I have nothing to fuel this intensity
It's turned on me in my glass room
And now this intensity is trapping me and becoming harmful
Where I'll burn, you think I'm finished
I'll be consumed by this intensity, but others may think I'm done for
Think I'm not winning
But little do they know, I'm still fighting and winning
Well, go on, assume
You can assume what you want, but I know the truth
So, take me, I'm yours, morning starship
Take me with you on this journey, I'm yours to command
Sparkling stars line your lights as they lift off the loneliest street corner
The night sky fills the view as we lift off the desolate street corner
This clown has yet leaned against
Even a goofball like me has never leaned against something like this before
I'll let all these fine faces fold into me
I'm ready to embrace all these great people around me
The warmth from the space lights illumines the sea as the laughingest mouths wetly open
The bright light from the stars lights up the ocean as everyone around me laughs
But we set them sighing
Despite their laughter, we remind them of things that make them sad
We'll take them flying
But we'll lift them up and help them soar
And we'll take this man left almost passed out
We'll help this poor guy who's almost unconscious
Cause we're pretty sure he needs a hand
We're pretty certain he could use some assistance
He says he can't stand
He tells us he can't stand on his own
And when we pick him up
But we're here to lend a hand and give him support
He asks us where this ship will land
He's curious where this journey will take him
But he knows we know it isn't coming down
But deep down inside, he knows this ship will never come back down to Earth
He knows we know we'll fly so far
But he also knows we'll fly so far away from the memories that once held us down
Til finally stars hold him in all around
And until finally, the stars surround him, engulfing him in all their glory
Til he forgets the ground
Until he forgets the world below, and is lost in the nebulas and stars
Til he forgets the crawling way
Until he forgets the monotonous life he once led and embraces the endless possibilities
Real people sometimes are
Despite our faults, we're all still human at the end of the day
