Niteclub
Old 97's Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A girl is turning twenty-two today
How am I supposed to entertain you?
My fingertips are worthless when my mind's so far away
Eighteen hundred miles from Manhattan
The niteclub yawns and opens up its doors
Thank God that I don't have to pay the cover
This old niteclub stole my youth
Yeah this old niteclub stole my true love
It follows me around from town to town
I just might get drunk tonight, burn the niteclub down
Yeah I just might get drunk tonight, burn the niteclub down
[Incomprehensible]
Telephones make strangers out of lovers
Whiskey makes the strangers all look good
Well my angel of the morning is in mourning
My life was misspent, don't let me be misunderstood
And this old niteclub stole my youth
Yeah this old niteclub stole my true love
It follows me around from town to town
I just might get drunk tonight, burn the niteclub down
Yeah I just might get drunk tonight, burn the niteclub down
Yeah I just might get drunk tonight, burn the niteclub down
The lyrics to Old 97's's song Niteclub depict the struggles of being away from home and loved ones while constantly resorting to alcohol and partying to alleviate the pain. The first two stanzas describe the distance between the singer and his loved one being 1800 miles apart. The distance leaves him feeling lonely and disconnected from reality, resulting in feelings of inadequacy and inability to entertain his significant other. The niteclub, a place he frequents for solace, opens its doors every night, but his financial instability subjects him to the misery of being broke.
The third stanza confesses how this niteclub has cost him his youth and true love, chasing him from town to town. The fourth stanza emphasizes how technology and alcohol exacerbate the distance between him and his significant other, making him scatter for comfort in other places. Lastly, the chorus depicts how the niteclub symbolizes all his struggles and might drive him to lose control and burn it down.
Overall, the song tells a story of a man who feels helpless and lost, relying on external sources to cope with his pain.
