Just Friends
Oliver Jones Trio Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just friends, lovers no more
Just friends, but not like before
To think of what we've been and not to kiss again
Seems like pretending it isn't the ending
Two friends drifting apart
Two friends, but one broken heart
We loved, we laughed, we cried, and suddenly love died

Overall Meaning

The song "Just Friends" by the Oliver Jones Trio talks about the end of a romantic relationship and the attempt to remain friends afterwards. The couple in the song have decided to end their romance and become just friends. However, it is clear that they have feelings for each other and it is difficult to move on from their past love. The line "To think of what we've been and not to kiss again" speaks to the emotional struggle of separating one's romantic feelings from wanting to relive past moments. The lyrical repetition of "just friends" further emphasizes the sentiment of the situation.

The tone of the song is melancholic and introspective. The piano melody has a jazzy, nostalgic feel that supports the reflection on the past. Ultimately, the song suggests that although they can no longer be lovers, they still desire each other and will always have a special connection. The emotions conveyed in the lyrics and the music make "Just Friends" a relatable song for anyone who has experienced the end of a romantic relationship.

When I was studying engineering in Montreal, I used to live in an appartement across a jazz bar “Le Grand Café”. Oliver Jones was often playing gigs, I used to chat with him, indeed a great and humble human being. I was bringing my books and was trying to study while listening to Oliver playing: not surprisingly it didn’t work out but still ended with my engineering degree.

Two of the greatest Montrealers jazz musicians.

Technically, due to his condition this may not have been Oscar’s best, it certainly was one of his most moving performances. Can’t help going back to it again and again. Beautiful....

Oscar Peterson is great here as always, but the way he played in his 40s/50s is unmatchable
