Likened to 松田聖子, she won a singing contest and was signed to a Japanese recording company at the age of 15.
After completing her O-level examinations in Singapore, Olivia moved to Japan to further her studies and career as a solo artist. There, she became a member of a Japanese pop (J-pop) group called Mirai, before she released her bestselling debut, "A Girl Meets Bossa Nova" at only 19.
With her sultry, soulful and innocent vocals, she has since done her reinterpretation of Frank Sinatra's "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars" as well as other jazz and pop numbers.
Part of the wave of Singaporean talents being exported internationally, Olivia has, by far, been the only pop sensation exported exclusively to Japan, while previous stars such as 陳潔儀, 蔡健雅 and 孫燕姿 have only been exporting to the Greater Chinese market through Hong Kong and Taipei.
In 2009, Olivia signed to Taiwanese company HIM International Music and released her first album under HIM in March of 2010.
How Insensitive
Olivia Ong Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I must have seemed
When he told me that he loved me
How unmoved and cold
I must have seemed
When he told me so sincerely
Why he must have asked
Did I just turn and stare in icy silence
What can you do?
When a love affair is over?
Now he's gone away
And I'm alone
With a memory of his last look
Vague and drawn and sad
I see it still
All the heartbreak in his last look
How he must have asked,
Did I just turn and stare in icy silence
What was I to do?
What can one do
When a love affair is over?
Olivia Ong's rendition of "How Insensitive" is a melancholic and reflective piece that tells the story of a protagonist who realizes too late the magnitude of her indifference to a lover's feelings, resulting in a failed romance. The opening line, "How insensitive I must have seemed when he told me that he loved me," displays the singer's regretful tone. She realizes that, in hindsight, she was unable to feel or reciprocate the love that the man had for her. She then questions her own emotional capacity when she asked, "What was I to do? What can you do when a love affair is over?"
The second verse shares the consequences of the singer's emotional opacity. Though in the past, the man's memories still haunt her. She laments, "Now, he's gone away, and I'm alone with the memory of his last look." She remembers how aloof and detached she was when he was sincerely confessing his love, and it pains her that she failed to reciprocate his feelings. She imagines how it felt for him to deal with the heartbreak as his expression was "vague and drawn and sad." She concludes by asking the same question again, "What was I to do? What can one do when a love affair is over?"; reflective of the regretful thoughts that surface in many people who have lost love due to their own disregard for their partner's emotions.
