Likened to 松田聖子, she won a singing contest and was signed to a Japanese recording company at the age of 15.
After completing her O-level examinations in Singapore, Olivia moved to Japan to further her studies and career as a solo artist. There, she became a member of a Japanese pop (J-pop) group called Mirai, before she released her bestselling debut, "A Girl Meets Bossa Nova" at only 19.
With her sultry, soulful and innocent vocals, she has since done her reinterpretation of Frank Sinatra's "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars" as well as other jazz and pop numbers.
Part of the wave of Singaporean talents being exported internationally, Olivia has, by far, been the only pop sensation exported exclusively to Japan, while previous stars such as 陳潔儀, 蔡健雅 and 孫燕姿 have only been exporting to the Greater Chinese market through Hong Kong and Taipei.
In 2009, Olivia signed to Taiwanese company HIM International Music and released her first album under HIM in March of 2010.
Sometimes When We Touch
Olivia Ong Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And I choke on my reply
I'd rather hurt you honestly
Than mislead you with a lie
And who am I to judge you
On what you say or do?
I'm only just beginning to see the real you
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides
Romance and all its strategy
Leaves me battling with my pride
But through the insecurity
Some tenderness survives
I'm just another writer
Still trapped within my truth
A hesitant prize fighter
Still trapped within my youth
And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides
At times I'd like to break you
And drive you to your knees
At times I'd like to break through
And hold you endlessly
At times I understand you
And I know how hard you've tried
I've watched while love commands you
And I've watched love pass you by
At times I think we're drifters
Still searching for a friend
A brother or a sister
But then the passion flares again
And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides
The lyrics of Olivia Ong's "Sometimes When We Touch" convey a message about the complexity and contradictions that can exist within love and relationships. The first verse speaks to the importance of honesty, even if it means causing pain to the other person. The second verse delves deeper into the performer's insecurities and struggles with vulnerability. She recognizes her own flaws and the struggles she faces as someone who is still trying to figure out how to navigate love and relationships.
The chorus highlights the intense emotional connection between the two individuals. It's not always easy to be completely honest and vulnerable with someone else, but there are moments when their connection is so strong that the honesty and vulnerability become too much to bear. Despite the challenges, the performer expresses a deep desire to hold onto the relationship and the other person until the fear and insecurity subside.
The final verse reflects on the ups and downs of the relationship, acknowledging that there are times when the couple may feel lost and unsure. However, passion and love still exist between them, sparking hope for a brighter future.
Overall, "Sometimes When We Touch" offers a raw and honest exploration of the struggles that come with love, relationships, and emotional intimacy. The lyrics remind us that even when we're faced with uncertainty and vulnerability, it's worth holding onto those moments of connection and honesty with the people we care about.

It's not my place to criticize you
On what you say or do?
Your words and actions are yours to choose

There are moments when we connect deeply
The honesty's too much
Our emotional closeness is overwhelming

I wanna hold you til I die
I want to embrace you forever
Til we both break down and cry
Until our emotions overpower us
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides
I want to hold you until my anxiety lessens
Romance and all its strategy
Love and its tactics are complicated
Leaves me battling with my pride
My ego sometimes gets in the way
But through the insecurity

I'm just another writer
I'm an ordinary person expressing myself through words
Still trapped within my truth
I'm still bound by my own perspective and experiences
A hesitant prize fighter
I'm a fighter who's hesitant to go all in
Still trapped within my youth
I'm still affected by my past and youthful naivety
At times I'd like to break you
Sometimes I want to push your limits
And drive you to your knees
And make you submit to me
At times I'd like to break through
Other times, I want to break down your walls
And hold you endlessly
And never let you go
At times I understand you
There are moments when I comprehend you
And I know how hard you've tried
I recognize your effort and struggle
I've watched while love commands you
I've seen how love controls you
And I've watched love pass you by
And I've seen love slip away from you
At times I think we're drifters
Sometimes, I feel like we're lost wanderers
Still searching for a friend
Still seeking a companion
A brother or a sister
Someone to share a familial bond with
But then the passion flares again
But then our passion is reignited
