Rodrigo's debut studio album, SOUR, topped the charts globally and was met with widespread critical acclaim. She is nominated in seven categories at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist, Album of the Year for SOUR, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year for "drivers license". On June 30, 2023, Rodrigo released the lead single to her sophomore album, "Vampire." The single would debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and several other countries' music charts, and her record "GUTS" released on September 8, 2023. The symbolism in the video is amazing. The multiple versions of her signifying her different emotions of love, hate, longing, and sadness. It was super interesting to see all of them interact in the chaos. I think I’m my opinion the glass shattering is the end of the relationship and when to comes back together at some points it’s Olivia wanting to mend the relationship, but knowing it can’t which is why the glass never fully returns to normal. What I love about these lyrics is that you never know through the song if she really wants to get him back as in revenge, or get him back as a boyfriend. Emothion versus reason, love versus hate, do I or don't I...the tensions are incredible yet she sings happily about it. This is a good music video. The camerawork really sells it and the multiple personalities idea was creative. The picking of the purple rose during the bridge as a nod to "he loves me, he loves me not" in parallel to how the song contradicts itself in her feelings towards the boy was perfect. We need more effort put in by our biggest pop stars in order to bring back music videos, because I'm tired of seeing these huge hit songs within the last few years that have music videos with less than 100M views. Music videos have fallen off in the eyes of what is important for good music promotion and it's very sad. I believe music videos need to be promoted on other platforms than just Youtube. Maybe sending them to TikTok, Reels, and other short video platforms would really help to bring back their popularity. Anyways, I knew Get Him Back was going to be the third single as soon as I listened to the full album. Can't wait to see what happens next. I'm predicting this is gonna be the next Good 4 U in terms of worldwide success.

I'm not sure if it's the rock vibe of GUTS that didn't resonate, but at only 30+ million views (along with Bad Idea Right?), GUTS didn't produce another Driver's License or Good 4 U, which is unfortunate because as a whole, GUTS is better than SOUR and definitely deserved more love than what it got.

I’m 46 and some teen girls were blasting this and dancing to it at a friend’s family party, and I can’t believe how much I dig it! Her monotone lyrics mixed with the fuzzy guitars and drumbeat at the beginning of the song remind me big time of Beck’s “Loser.” I wonder if it was an influence on her? Great tune!

@@philmole1209oh for sure, I shoulda said the lyrical flows, the drumbeat and the fuzzy guitars that form the backbone of the song really gave it that “Loser” vibe.

Also the more I think about it the Butthole surfers song “pepper” from a similar time in the 90s also had the same monotone rap/talk style with a lone drumbeat followed by a loud joyous guitar chorus like this song does as well. I wonder if Olivia Rodrigo knows there’s an awesome band called The Butthole Surfers? 🍑🕳️🏄‍♂️
