hope ur ok
Olivia Rodrigo Lyrics
I knew a boy once, when I was small
A tow-head blond, with eyes of salt
He played the drum in the marching band
His parents cared more about the Bible
Than being good to their own child
He wore long sleeves 'cause of his dad
And somehow, we fell out of touch
Hope he took his bad deal and made a royal flush
Don't know if I'll see you again someday
My middle school friend grew up alone
She raised her brothers on her own
Her parents hated who she loved
She couldn't wait to go to college
She was tired 'cause she was brought
Into a world where family was merely blood
Does she know how proud I am she was created
With the courage to unlearn all of their hatred
We don't talk much but I just gotta say
"I miss you, and I hope that you're okay"
Address the letters, to the holes in my butterfly wings
Nothing's forever, nothing is as good as it seems
And when the clouds are ironed out
And the monsters creep into your house
And every door is hard to close
Well, I hope you know how proud I am you were created
With the courage to unlearn all of their hatred
God, I hope that you're happier today
'Cause I love you, and I hope that you're okay

This song takes a step back from her past relationship and focuses on her old neighborhood friends that had a difficult youth. This song is believed to be addressing how these friends were not accepted for being a part of the LGBTQ+ community, with lyrics like “his parents cared more about the Bible than being good to their own child” and “her parents hated who she loved”. In the first verse, “he wore long sleeves ‘cause of his dad” means that he was abused as a child for being who he was. In this song, Olivia expresses that she hopes her childhood friends are doing better today than they were before. She explains how she is proud that they were created “with the courage to unlearn all of their hatred”, aka hatred against the LGBTQ+ community, which they were raised on.

I relate to this so much,
The lyrics:
“His parents cared more about the Bible
Than being good to their own child” and
“… And somehow, we fell out of touch”
I had a friend who I grew up with and our families met through church and he was the youngest of 6 and he didn’t get a lot of attention and we were best friends and we grew apart and I miss him so much
And the the part:
“Her parents hated who she loved”
My best friend just came out as bi to her parents and I was going to get her a bi flag for her birthday and she texted me that she had a talk with her mom and it just slipped out and her mom doesn’t want her do define herself yet even though she spent months thinking about it and she put a lot of thought into it and it just breaks my heart and she doesn’t think j should get her the bi flag anymore
Also just the whole “ I hope you know how proud I am you were created” that applies to a lot of people in my life but listening to this song just makes me cry
