maybe this helps, if you follow the bass you hear a melody, i hear something like the main phrase as a progression pack
II V I,
II V IIM ,
II V I IV #IV...,
and developing of that structure
(i mean not literally that numbers but alike those harmonic functions very overloaded by melodic cadences of the dissonance, this is not triadic stuff) orchestrated in paths of 4ths and 5ths and using transposition and hindu rythms. maybe some modes of limited transpositions as well. hearing the full piece i end up with a really pleasant relief and the sensation that a something monumentally meaningfull had happened.
.
.
i think the V is some more like a a III M, u feel this searches for acoustic contrasts for tension and resolution and harmony is deriving from modal unusual arrangements

This piece should be the first major piece played on the Notre Dame Great Organ once it is rebuilt and restored after the tragic fire.  The composer even described the piece as construction of a "heavenly church", stone by stone, after going through hell (referencing Dante's Inferno). He described the pedal beats as "the rhythm of construction". It's almost as if this piece was written for the rebuild.

MrShadyfish it was in fact played at the reinauguration concert for the most recent renovation of the Notre-Dame organ itself.

I would have said Crocodile Rock personally but your idea is good too

It reminded me of Milton's Paradise Lost, so it's impressive that Messiaen had Dante in mind! I never knew the organ could be this powerfully infernal!

Charles Davis

Wouldn't that be a grand idea? ! What else might be on the program... when the doors are opened... again? I can almost hear a grand improv on the Marseilles. It will be historic. A planetary affair. Latry is there. Daniel Roth. Etc.

FRANCOIS SCHALLER

Great idea indeed. Second piece could be " Money, Money...."

This performance is over the top awesome!!! What a sound! The piece is absolutely incredible. The surging of the pedal notes, the dissonances that resolve to open fifth chords, the slow unrelenting push forward, the amazing dynamics, the climax on a C major chord. What can you say. A masterpiece for sure.

That minor-minor modulation at 4:30 is electrifying! ⚡️

There should be an "in awe" button on YouTube. Thumbs up doesn't begin to describe how I feel about this music.
